> W & J Sloane started as a rug and carpet business in New
York City on Mrch 2, 1843 by William Sloane, a Scottish
immigrant.
In 1852, he partnered with his brother John and W & J Sloane
was born. In the late 19th c., W & J Sloane added an
antiques department, started producing furniture and sold
home furnishings becoming the first home furnishings store
in the country. in 1891, it incorporated and went on to set
the national decorating taste of the country until 1955 when
the store finally left family hands. It is a pretty amazing
feat considering it had retail stores such as Macy's to
compete against. During that period, W & J Sloane decorated
the White House, did Hollywood movie sets, did interiors of
automobiles,
and so many houses. After the store left family hands, it
was taken over by people who over expanded, and cheapened
the lines.
The chain filed for bankruptcy on Sept. 11, 1985 of all
dates.
I am in the process of turning the 2nd William Sloane's
estate into a public park and historic site.
Your table was retailed by Sloane. Unless it was custom, it
was probably not made by them. Hold on to it though. Value
when increase once the estate opens. In Dec. 2005, look for
an on-line exhibition called "Elegance" about the Sloane
family.
