Just bought a really neal ashtray stand. It's about 2 feet tall, heavy
cast metal (prob. iron) painted black, and in the shape of a heron. The
auctioneer sold it as Art Deco, but I know that's wrong. I'd call it
Art Nouveau. (It's right on the cusp between
beautiful and hideous, so it matches the rest of my stuff perfectly!)

Anyhow, my question is....What type of ashtray should I be looking for?
I'd like one that is as close to the original as possible.

Pics can be taken and sent upon request.

Gillam, are you positive that this is a smoking stand? I'm
wondering if it could be a plant stand.

In any case, I guess the best ashtray would be one that
nests well in the space provided - and lacking knowledge
of what went there, probably the plainest you can find.

Gillam---
You've "probably" got a smoking stand there. I've seen them
with ashtrays that are the deep amber-colored glass (authentic,
original ashtray, that is---it's my mom's who hasn't thrown anything
away since 1919!). I think there were also some sort of green
glass ashtrays that fit them. Failing finding either of these, I'd
guess you'd have to go with clear glass.

I sold one of these about 4 years ago and I also thought it was an ashtray
holder. I sold it to a smoking memorabilia collector who also thought so. I
agree that a simple round one with a lip that will fit over the rim is best.
