There's an article in the New York Times about good buys at storage
locker auctions due to home foreclosures. Just a heads up for anyone
looking for stuff.

Might not be a bad idea.

I own a storage facility.....I am left with literally TONS of
stuff....mostly second hand furniture. Legally we follow the book in terms
of "auctioning off " these items however, we keep a bay full of stuff and
give it to underpriviledged families. The odd rarity does show up ......

Once went to an auction at a long term storage facilty in the San
Francisco area. Only went because an auctioneer I did a lot of
business with was working it and actually scored some great inventory
- best buy of the day was a nice period English bow front chest for
$50. Paid my rent with that one. Was part of the stored inventory of a
dealer who had died many years before. I only bought things I could
see - most boxes were sold sealed & I wasn't willing to gamble.

Still chuckle when I remember one guy who got into a lunatic bidding
war over a group of 5 sealed wooden barrels with "contents." Came from
the same storage lot that my chest did. Old and really heavy, they had
markings that led him to believe they were filled with sets of antique
china. A curious crowd gathered 'round after the auction
watching, with great anticipation, he pried off the lids...
$1000 dollars worth of the ugliest damned concrete garden gnomes I'd
ever seen...he couldn't give 'em away. Don't think he quite ever
lived it down.

In our area storage unit actions are really great. Around here they
don't auction individual items. They auction the entire unit. They
open the door, give you a couple of minutes to decide if you want to
bid. You can't go inside or touch anything. You can make some good
money from the sales of the items.
I've been learning to blog by writing about some of my experiences at
this type auction.
