I have a old C&O RR crank telephone. It is in excellent condition. I
am considering selling it was hoping someone could give me an idea
what it is worth.
It is all original, still has the inner workings. The name of the
station is stamped on the edge of the box part when the front is
opened.
Thanks for any assistance and info.

Telephones are outside my field but are more specialist collectables
than antiques. As a general comment, value would depend on age,
condition, maker, originality, demand and rarity - hard to judge without
good pictures and knowing the telephone market. If you want to sell it
why not put it on an internet auction site where, if properly described
and well pictured plus having a realistic starting price, it should
fetch its fair value.

Check out the big internet auction site for similar phones, and what
they are selling for (NOT what they are listed for).

is your phone the long body version with handset and mouth piece say 24
inches long by 10 wide....small writing deck projecting from the front?? I
have dealt in many over the years and converted some for updated
electronics.
In our market, western Canada, good examples have sold for 650.00 , however
350.00 was the norm for many years.
Back when our railway (CPR) converted to new phones, the old ones were
gathered into a pile and burned. Many did escape this fate. I have owned a
good clean phone which hung above my CPR caboose stove. This was a pot
bellied stove with an add on food warmer that had embossed cabooses on the
doors. Very cool and rare piece.
Thanks for the good advice from all.
Yes, the phone I have is as you described it. Just below the base of
teh mouthpiece and above the small writing deck it's stamped C&O. It
is really in mint condition, I've had it for almost 40 yrs. The RR's
must have had a top level meeting regarding the disposition of all the
wooden crank phones. The C&O and the RF&P disposed of their phones
very much the same. Some were burned, the rest went to a landfill. A
few of the employees were able to confiscate a few for posterity's
sake.
Thanks again everyone.
