I think a new discussion about BOSE is needed because of their
headphones. I see people at the gym, airport, even a museum dining
room wearing BOSE headsets.

Now I know that each of these people has shelled out $350 bucks for
these cans but I hardly think they are worth it.

I think BOSE doesn't charge what an item is worth but decides before
hand what they want to charge and then designs something they think
will fit the bill.

The only Bose labeled item that can be considered worthwhile are their
aviation headsets ... they are very well regarded in the industry ....

That's the key. They design certain items to sell to certain people, and they do
that well. They never expected that the Wave Radio was going to replace all other
clock radios. What they did know was that certain people wanted a decent easy-to-use
clock radio that also had an air of snobbery to it. The continued success of that
product proves that they knew what they were doing, whether or not their products are
appreciated by audiophiles.

To repeat what I posted on another Bose thread...
"Captain, I canna change the laws of physics... even if Mr. Bose
thought he could in the late 20th century." (original edited!)
IMHO, Bose stuff is overpriced for what you get, also over
(hysterically?) promoted, and in all audio categories you can get a
better price and performance with other suppliers.
Cheers,
Roger

They're just selling where people have money to burn. Nothing new,
retail marketing has been doing this since day 1.

To re-iterate what I said here probably most of a year ago: I can walk
into any chain electronics store or Target and they have at most one
or two models of AM/FM radios. But they have an aisle and a half of
iPod skins, headphones, docking stations, carrying cases, etc., all at
completely ridiculous prices.

You and me aren't where the money is to be made this week. But the
folks who will drop $80-$350 dollars on a set of overpriced
headphones, or buy a $70 iPod skin, or put $300 into an iPod docking
station, are where the money is.

My favorite headphones are JRC ST-3's, BTW. Hardly what an iPod user
would buy, but I still like them.

Perhaps those using them do this it is worth it. I do. They
a) have decent sound quality,
b) have effective noise reduction,
c) are comfortable for long term use,
d) do fold flat for packing.

Now other headphones may be better in one or more of these areas. But, it
was the combination of the above that made them worthwhile for me.

I tried other brands and was not satisfied.

I own the Bose headphone.
I use the Bose headphone.

Can you share your personal experience using the Bose headphone?

I have several hundred hours use on mine.

Personally, I use pair of Etonic inter canal phones that, due to
their in-ear configuration have good sound isolation. They sound very
good on minimum driving power and fold up into a tiny zippered bag
that's easy to tote. They cost me $100...... In the gym they are
superior because there is nothing covering my ear to cause
perspiration and discomfort.

I heard the BOSE phones. ACtually, they sound pretty good. Isolation
is so-so, mostly cancelling long term noise but not shouts, infant
crying etc........ But for $350 and a few bucks more I can get a set
of AKG 701 cans which I know are going to blow the BOSE away.....

The subject says Bose headphones. I have yet to have a need for
noise cancelling. Some of todays best phones are from Audio Tecknica.
I have the ath ad700 an open ear design. The closed back is the ATH A700.
Fantastic phones. And there is the pro monotoring set ATH-M50.

The latter is the most expensive, however there are other high-end models
with silly pure wiring and stuff for up to $1000.

I got mine from Ambient Weather.

I might speculate there's a serious problem with channel separation, however.

I have a set of those Bose headsets - I generally use them without the audio
cord just to get quiet - they have flown around 100,000 miles with me, you
have no idea how much more rested you are after a 12 hour flight (or even a
short flight like LA to NY) when you can cut back on the background noise.
I frankly couldn't care less about their sound quality, they work, they work
well, and I'd buy them again.

Now, that said, when listening at home, with headphones, I have a pair of
Stax electrostatics and the associated amplifier - now THAT is a good set of
headphones.

but neither of these are vintage...... back to our topic......

I also have a pair of Audio-Technicas and they are stunning....probably
the best currently available overall for the price.

Other phones I have (most not made anymore)

Pioneer SE-50

Stanton Dynaphase Sixty

Sony MDR-V6

Fostex T50RP

Panasonic RP-HT355

I would put most of these up against the BOSE phones for sound quality,
and they are 1/3 the price or less.
