First a little bit to get us in the proper spirit.

Red Peters, "Holy Shi* it's Christmas."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQEYG1H8flY

And no, this is NOT safe to play at work with the volume
turned up.

Now, as to how this works:

You send email to me
jangus at suddenlink dot net

Include you name, email address and a valid mailing address.

If you want, include a note if there's something in particular
you want (or don't need yet another one of.)

Sorry about the short notice, try an get all you replies into
me by the 18th of December so there's a fighting chance of
getting things out in time for Christmas.

Look for stuff in the corners of your shop or under your
workbench, remember as they say in the plumbing industry,
"Your crap is my bread and butter."

Santa's little helper.

I ain't. More like shaking my head at the "Not invented here"
culture of "no."

I think I've been doing this here for at least 7-8 years now.
Except for one cretin that accused me of cherry picking gifts
for myself, it's gone rather smoothly overall.

As a result of that, I've recused myself from the list of
recipients.

Jeff

I was wondering how long I've done this. Google Groups to
the rescue. Looks like I started this in 2003, so this will
be #7 for the group.

As a side note, this all started when Peter Wieck tried to
get rid of an extra CRT booster laying around. And I thought,
"Hrmmm, we all have stuff like that we don't need, let's
see how much we can give away."

I'd like to thank everyone that's participated in the past
and who is participating this year.

So how many participated? We used to have a pretty good turn out for
this. I think with so many providers dropping these groups
participation ain't what it used to be.

Total number of victims, er I mean participants, was seven.

Actually, several of the prior year participants are still
here in the news group, they just haven't joined in on it
this time around.

*Laughs* Imagine a few years back the guy that got Alan
Douglas. "Holy crap, what do I give to the man that apparently
already has everything?"

But how much of the stuff gets passed around year after year,
hoping to find a permanent home but no luck? "Someone gave
me this left handed widget that I have no use for, so I'm going
to make sure someone else gets it this year...."

Heh, that was my mother. Her and her cronies would pass the same
cheese balls and furit cakes back and forth year after year.
They finally got to the point where they stopped re-wrapping them.
Christmas was more like a scene out of _Great Expections_.

Ahem. That was I... ha ha, cruel joke Jeffy.

I ended up sending Alan a version of the Marvel Crystal Set
that I built from the old newspaper article that was posted
on the Internet a few years back. I guess he liked it, since
he reported some stations that he was able to hear with the
set!

That made me laugh out loud. How years of handling can cheese balls
take before they no longer look even plausible?

P.S. Everyone, I freely admit I like fruitcake, send me all your
unwanted ones. I never could figure out why it gets such a bad rap.
Its like the original energy bar... one slice of one of those fruit
cake bricks gives me enough energy to shovel snow for about two hours.

Actually, Participation in the group appears to be coming back up to
snuff, especially in the binaries.

I would have participated in the SS this year, but I remodeled my work
area last summer and the item I wanted to donate to the cause would have
taken so long to dig out of the hidey hole it's now in that I never
would have been able to ship anywhere close to being on time. I will do
it next year, for sure.

And I still have it. To tell the truth, the reason I don't
participate now is just what you said to begin with. Next year's
Santa sent me an entire radio, which I thought was way too much for
what was supposed to be gags.

Alan is very modest and is the most generous person I have met in this
hobby. Like he said the original idea was to pass around stuff that
might be amusing or even useful but just for fun. There was a pretty
good crowd here who were really die hard radio heads. Not to say the
folks here now are not but it was a larger community and one of the
only places where we could meet on the net. Times change and there are
many more sources for people to get information. This is an
unmoderated place for better or worse and it did get pretty wild for a
time, kind of entertaining I thought. I really don't understand why
there are such out of control flame wars sometimes with people who are
really cut from the same cloth. I guess it's part of being human but
as I get older the fuss over trivial things makes me think WTF, this
should be FUN.
