terry s. from here on the NG exchanged IM's with me as he ran back and forth
from the radio to the computer, giving me as many measurements as he could. he
e-mailed me pictures with a 6 inch rule laying in different places across the
designs. armed with these measurements and pictures, i headed off to my nephews
house to get his help with the artwork and converting the pictures into a line
drawing and ultimately a format that could be used by a resist cutting machine.
took the disc with the art to a sign company and had them cut a pattern out of
sandblast resist using a computer driven cutter. got the special order mirrors
in today, and sandblasted them. the result is nothing less than stunning. this
is a perfect reproduction of these mirrors. thanks to terry and other for their
help and patience helping me get this done. i couldn't have did it without you.
here is a picture of the finished mirror on the yet unfinished cabinet. the
sandblast part around the dial area looks translucent in the picture, but it is
really not. that is where i wiped the clear area off with windex before i put
it on the cabinet to take the picture. it was still a little damp.

the molding is partially done. it is difficult enough to make circular
molding, but when it had a round over on one side, a chamfer on the oter and a
rabbet to hold the glass, it get pretty tedius. plus it is in three pieces.
the outer radius is finished and i have done the rough cut on the chamfer. the
chamfer is especially problematic because it is not a 45 degree angle, so i
will have to either make a bit or make a jig to hold the router at the correct
angle. again, the circular shape makes that extremely difficult. do-able but
takes time and though. i will post pictures when i get it done.
the chassis is done.plays perfect. i am awaiting the Stromberg Carlson decal
and the correct grille cloth.. i have about 4 coats of lacquer on the cabinet
so far. it was a sound cabinet and should finish out real nice. again, thanks
to everyone who helped.

i did the blasting, the initial artwork, and dimensions. he did the rest on his
computer, but yes, it would have cost a fortune. probably as much or more than
the radio is worth. he is a genius when it comes to this stuff. a good while
back, he did the same thing for reproduction backs for the FADA bullet
catalins. he programmed the lazer to cut the backs out of 1/8 hardboard. it
made an absolutely perfect reproduction. only made one run of 10 and they sold
the lazer. too bad too. i was developing a database for reproducing a bunch of
the backs for the more valuable sets.
i told tery one night while we were exchanging the info via IM's, that we must
have totally lost it. he for running back and forth to his radio and me for
actually doing it. but MAN, it was fun! i really get into stuff like this.
it's stuff like this that has kept me in this hobby so long. I LOVE IT!
aw gaarsh..it tweren't nuthin.

An inspiration that given enough determination, no part is unavailable!
Just so I understand this, the only mirror part left is the silver rings?
You sandblasted all the rest out, then?

And considering the work that went into it, and the result, I think
it's fair.
Terry.
Thanks for the info, Terry. Man, that really is an amazing job.
