Strange porch find

strange there. Now I've had a lot of stuff turn up on my doorstep like
radios, spekers, record players, parts...ect... but this morning I
tripped over a 500 foot spool of....solder wick. I don't have the
foggiest idea where it came from, but I think I can now safely say
that if there's ever a national shortage of solder wick, I don't have
much to worry about.

Are you sure its solder wick and not copper braid? Is
there a label on it? Copper braid might be even more useful
than wick.

bucks. Copper ain't cheap any more.

Just a couple of months ago I stripped out a CATV headend that was wired
with double-braided copper and silver-plated center conductor. Easily
100 pounds plus.
I kept it around for a week or two hoping for an epiphany that would
keep me from having to lug it all to the dumpster. Never happened.
I do this often. If anybody wants it I'll put you down as a recipient
but frankly the cost to ship it anywhere isn't commensurate with its worth.

across...and it says solder wick right on the end of the spool. It's

You should make up little spools and sell them. That stuff ain't cheap!
I buy it in 100 foot rolls lengths myself.

They sure do. The town I live in only has about 8,000 folks here,
so everybody pretty much knows everybody else...or at least they know
OF each other. When word got around years ago now that I was repairing/
restoring/buying/selling/trading radios, lots of stuff just started
showing up on my porch. Not once has anyone ever admitted to me that
they were the one who left anything though.There's been some pretty
neat stuff show up here. It hasn't been that long ago, and I posted it
on here, that a Bendix model 526C catalin showed up. Crazy huh ???
Most of the stuff ends up just being parts radios and such, but every
once in a while something really cool...like the solder wick this
time...shows up.

Strip an inch from the end of six to 10 foot scrap and pull out the
center conductor and insulator. Then pull the inner braid out, followed
by the outer braid. Toss the outer insulation. Use liquid RMA flux to
dip the end of the braid for desoldering, and you can use the inner
conductor & insulation for the HV wiring in a scope or strip it for
scrap copper.
I didn't buy solder wick for almost 20 years, because I used scrap
braid, and a 1000 foot roll of surplus 1/8" braid I bought for $10. Wet
wicking is messier than dry, but reduces the chances of damaging what
you are working on.
