Found what I think is a cool Crosley floor radio in an antique shop
nearby but I could not make out any numbers on it, can anyone help me
ID
it or let me know of a good website that shows these? It has a VERY
big round dial (bigger than the Zeniths I've seen in stores too),
about 6 buttons on each side of it - tone on left and stations on
right, and 6 or 8 cylindrical vertical bars curving inward in front of
the speaker grille. It was marked at $250 but of course this is So
Calif. so... but it's complete. Cosmetically it's a little beyond
touching up so I would do a refinish on it myself. I'm looking for
good retirement projects and this one caught my eye. Thanks!

Hey I believe I stumbled on a pic of it here:

http://www.rfcafe.com/references/electrical/images/crosley-1926-floor-model-radio-kirt-blattenberger.jpg

The article just says it's a 1926 model, is this correct? Something
about the dial just doesn't look that old to me for some reason. I am
100% positive this is the one in the store. If anyone can tell me
more about it or if $250 is an absolutely ridiculous price to pay for
it in the stated condition, would be appreciated. All the buttons are
intact, speaker cone and grille cloth look great, just some loss of
finish at the trip around the base and little bits here and there.
Mainly it's the base that makes me say I would simply do a refinish of
the whole thing rather than try to touch it up. All the wood and
veneer look fine and solid. Thank you.

These Crosley sets were made in several versions, all are 1941-42
era. They are VERY common in the Midwest. The first series (1941)
has model codes beginning with 02, and letter codes CA, CB, and CP.
CA is BC& SW bands, CB has he early FM bandincluded and CP includes
a phono in a pull out drawer. These sets have some of the worst
plastic knobs ever, the original ivory look often tan and shrink so
badly that the original silver dollar size back knob goes down to the
size of a half dollar or less.

The second (03 code) series has same versions but uses larger brown
knobs. Myself and Ed Schutz of www.renovatedradios.com have been
doing extensive research on these knobs and Ed has started to
reproduce them.
Go to his site to see the fantastic results.

That is one great looking radio. Your picture looks a lot like this
Crosley model 02CA in the Radio Attic archives:

http://radioatticarchives.com/archive.htm?page=c2#Crosle

Slusser's 6th edition values this model (a 1941 model) at $150-180.00
(in 2005). It also lists model 02CP with a similar description, but
with phonograph. There is also a model 03CB with a description similar
to the 02CA. All three had ten tubes each and were valued the same in
Slusser's. Of course the real value of one example depends on many
variables, especially condition, but this might serve as a guide. You
can find a schematic diagram at

Man oh man I didn't think it would be this hard to find a pic of this
exact radio. That incorrect '1926' photo was the only one I could
find, but I'm almost certain it is the exact same one I saw. But you
say there were very common? Couldn't find any pics of 03 models, and
also found a 02ba (?)
Pretty sure all the buttons/knobs were dark brown. When I go back in
there I'll try again to find some numbers somewhere. The tuning knob
seems to be jammed, dial string is probably hung up or the dial is
just frozen.
I didn't think the price was that bad but I'm sure you guys who are
used to getting these things for $20 or $50 might not agree. : )
Other than the knobs, is it a good radio, as far as the design and
construction? I can handle the electronic restoration as I've done
several TVs, radios, and tons and tons of pinball machines. It's the
refinishing part that would take me more time to go slow and get it
decent looking.
Thanks

Thanks! I believe that the 03CB just may be it, from this pic:
http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/crosley_03cb.html

I'll go down there again tomorrow and check it out again and decide on
whether to drag it back home with me, if it is worth about 175 I guess
250 ain't that bad, I'll see if they'll knock a little off the price
too. I have collected and fixed b-w and color tube TVs, table and
transistor radios, and Victrolas, but have always wanted just one old,
pretty console radio for my house. There's another store nearby that
is full of similar radios, but they are all already restored - that's
no fun! : ))

Here in the midwest these sell at the old radio meets in the $50-75
price range Frenchy. Watch it when you have a go at the refinish work
as some of that stuff is Photo Finish and not real veneer I think.

Yes I just finished a similar one for a customer a couple months ago.
As Mark Oppat said.. Ed Shcutz does now have knob sets and the buttons.

Are there any general areas of the cabinet that usually have that
photo-type finish on them? Was it used for specific fancy graining,
or just anywhere to save money? I guess I'll be able to tell when I
go back there and eyeball it some more. I could probably handle some
small veneer adding/replacing like flat areas, but not curved or
complicated stuff. I reveneered the top of a Victrola once but that's
it.
Forgot I had to go to the dentist today so I'll go back to see the
radio tomorrow.
Thanks for the info!

Well I went to go take one more look at it a few weeks ago, naturally
somebody else had bought it from under my nose! : ( Oh well I'll
stay on the hunt for a nice floor radio to go with all my other stuff
packed in my crackbox of a house : )
