I have a couple of large panel meters from around 1912 that have N.C.S.
printed on the faceplate. Also I see an ad in a 1914 magazine offering
an "N.C.S. Insulation Testing Set." Does anyone know what N.C.S. stands
for? I have plenty of guesses, but I'm hoping someone can tell me what
it means. Thanks!

Naval Communication Service. Basically the Navy was in charge of radio
standards in those days.

"Recommendations for changes in organization of the Radio Service were
made in the supplementary report of a board on organization of the Radio
Service ordered by the Secretary of the Navy in his letter 624-109 of
May 1, 1916. In general, it was recommended that the office of the
Superintendent of Radio Service be changed to the office of Director
Naval Communications, and that the name "Naval Radio Service," be
changed to "Naval Communication Service;" that the Director Naval
Communications be charged with the duties now performed by the
Superintendent of Radio Service; and, in addition, be responsible for
the efficient handling of all telegraph, telephone, cable, and,
generally, all dispatch work between the Navy Department and the fleet
and throughout the naval service outside the fleet. In the
administration of the foregoing, that he have general charge of the
operation, organization, and administration of the Communication Service.
The following general organization was recommended for the
administration of the Communication Service:
1. Director naval communications.
2. Assistant for administration and Atlantic coast superintendent.
3. Assistant for communications and four communication officers.
4. Pacific coast superintendent.
5. Philippine communication superintendent.
6. Assistant for commercial traffic.
7. A communication superintendent for each district.
The board further recommended that the office of the director be
established in the Navy Department as soon as space could be made
available. This is considered of great importance.
The above report is of a confidential nature and the details of the
organization are not set forth herein."

Thanks, Bill, but I suspect this isn't it, since we are talking about
1912, not after 1916, and all of the references I have found to N.C.S.
are on British equipment. Since I made the post I found a 1909 Nalder
Bros catalog that lists a bunch of "N.C.S. Pattern" instruments. So I
think some kind of calibaration standard is most likely.

How about "National Correspondence Schools"

Didn't they become NRI or something else? I haven't found a reference to
them yet, although "North Carolina State" (University) was the only other
one that had any relevance as to the time frame.

After about 3 pages or so, I learned NRI closed it's doors in 2002. The most
common hits on NRI are about services to "Non-resident Indians", mostly
India Indians.

It has nothing to do with the OPs request, but after 20 minutes of slogging
around it's interesting, maybe.

Please qualify "almost" while you are at it, but keep in mind anybody who
replies that they agree has categorically lied by default.

He should just subscribe to news:alt.test since no one actually reads

I'm still surprised that you haven't responded to my offer for parts! Well,
give me qabout an hour to set up the camera again and put it together and
I'll have a list and some pictures for you. I am still not joking.

He shouldn't be rewarded with responses from Ken, you or ME. He's a
misfit with a disorder and would go away in due time. Unfortunately, we
'people' have a tendency to repeatedly reset his clock by reaching over
and tapping our own snooze-alarm which does a continuous disservice to
all involved.

I've also got an ARESCOM DSL modem branded MSN, NetDSL 800, model
ND860VUE-MSN with PS and a working CASIO FR-5100 full-sized printing
calculator minus the paper holder and maybe a cordless phone and a BellSouth
digital answering machine, depending if I can get another unit going. A
working HP842C USB capable printer and an OfficeJet v90 provided it can be
made to run. I should have some powered speakers too. I have maybe half a
dozern or more PCI video cards around here, depending on how well they'll
work on modern computers mostly 1 and 2 mb and one of these is 4 mb. Also I
have a lot of IDE and floppy cables (1 SCSI cable too) but you'd have to
check them out--many were new. I have many more audio cards and such but
they're in two spots (some are in the cellar I think or else the closet) so
I'll have to go look.

I told you I was serious.

Now please get back to me however you choose to. My account has no blocks.

You are right. I kill filed his ISP on every newsgroup I read, and
blocked it on all my E-mail accounts after his last round of nasty
e-mails.

Do you want to play lying games? Do I want to call your attorney general?

Put up or be quiet... I know how to tell the difference.

I've offered you parts six or seven times, and you sit here and insult me!

I complained to this church of yours that you haven't been very "Christian"
in response to a genuine want to help your case. You should feel ashamed. I
feel disgusted.
