CATALOGUE 19
PART ONE: ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS

ALL PRICES ARE IN US DOLLARS.

1. [ANON] THE LIVES OF RICHARD TURPIN, AND WILLIAM NELSON, TWO
NOTORIOUS HIGHWAYMEN: Containing A Particular Account of all their
Adventures, Until their Trial and Execution at York. York: Printed
and Sold by T. Deighton, Shambles. N.d. (circa 1800). Original
blueish-grey printed wrappers. 35 pages, engraved frontispiece (of
a Murder scene!). Some light general wear to wrappers, paper a bit
browned but in all a nice copy. Certainly a scarce item in the
original wrappers. $200.00
THE LIFE OF WILLIAM JOHNSON, is attributed to Captain
Johnson, and is extracted from his GENERAL HISTORY OF THE LIVES AND
ACTIONS OF THE MOST FAMOUS HIGHWAYMEN... [1742]. It is possible
that the Turpin account is by him as well. Captain Johnson is
generally agreed to be a pseudonym, and some speculation exists
that it is really Defoe.

2. [ANON] THE LIFE OF RICHARD TURPIN, A MOST NOTORIOUS
HIGHWAYMAN, Giving a Particular Account of all his Daring Robberies
and Burglaries, Trial, Execution, Burial &c. Glasgow: Printed for
the Booksellers. N.d. (circa 1850). Self wrappers. 24 pages,
illustration on front wrapper (supposed to be Turpin, but looking
more like an Arab with a turban, pointed shoes and scimitar).
Probably disbound out of a collection of pamphlets, the front cover
working loose, a very good copy. $100.00
Essentially the same text as the item above, although
somewhat abbreviated.

3. BECKMAN, JOHN. A HISTORY OF INVENTIONS, DISCOVERIES, AND
ORIGINS. Translated from the German by William Johnston. Fourth

F.L.S., Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians. London:
Henry G. Bohn, York Street, Covent Garden. 1846. 2 volumes. 8vo.
Portrait frontispiece in each volume. Half calf with marbled
boards, all edges marbled, the spines divided into five
compartments & decorated in gilt, contrasting leather title labels.
Heraldic bookplate in each volume, some minor edgewear to covers,
a near fine set. $165.00

4. [BOOKPLATES] 16 EX-LIBRIS DI VITEZSLAV FLEISSIG. Milano:
Luigi Filippo Bolaffio. 1950. Portfolio, limited to 100 copies, of
which this is copy number 20. 16 large engraved bookplates mounted
on card stock with tissue guards. About fine, overall. $150.00
The images on the bookplates range from the bizarre to the
erotic to the poignant - the most evocative image being EX LIBRIS
LUIGI FILIPPO BOLAFFIO, In Memorium Michel Fingesten 1883- 1943,
which portrays Jewish Holocaust victims, a German Soldier as Death,
and an Angel of Mercy.

5. [BOUNTY MUTINY] [Anon] A DESCRIPTION OF PITCAIRN'S ISLAND
AND ITS INHABITANTS. With An Authentic Account Of The Mutiny Of The

original brown cloth titled and decorated gilt on spine. Issued as
No. 31 in The Family Library. 2 engraved plates, tissue guard. Mild
wear to cloth at head & heel of spine, some slight external
cracking of spine hinge, Bookplate of the Simcoe Circulating

really nice, handsome copy. $175.00

6. BURNET, Gilbert, D.D. THE ABRIDGEMENT OF THE HISTORY OF THE
REFORMATION OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND. London: Printed for Ric.
Chiswell in St. Paul's Church-Yard, and to be sold by John Lawrence
at the Angel in Cornhill, MDCLXXII (1682). 1st printing of this
abridgement. 8vo. The first edition was published in three parts,
1679-1715; this is in 2 parts. Engraved frontispiece and two
double-page plates, the frontispiece depicting 4 scenes pertaining
to the text, one of which shows the burning of heretics, the extra
plates are engraved portraits of 16 notables of the times. Old
calf, worn but sturdy, the panels with a decorated ruled border,
apparently rebacked but at an early date, the spine with raised
bands, contrasting leather title label. Small worm-hole affecting
the upper margin of the first 14 leaves, and mildly entering the
first two plates; overall, a very good, sound copy. $250.00
