rec.food.veg World Guide to Vegetarianism

______________________________________________________________________

This guide contains a world list of vegetarian restaurants,
vegetarian-friendly restaurants, natural food stores, vegetarian
organizations, etc. The information was mostly obtained from people
who post on rec.food.veg. It is far from complete, but nonetheless
should provide useful information to many people.

If you have any additions or corrections please e-mail them to me
and/or one of the below listed regional co-ordinators. Please format
any new or corrected entries in the same format as those in the
listings. Keep comments and reviews short, simple, and straight to the
point as much as possible.

If you wish to become the editor of the listings for your area, please
contact me. We are always looking for volunteers. Currently we have
the following regional co-ordinators:

USA:
California: Elliot Omiya <eom...@borland.com>
Seattle & Washington state: Phil Hughes <fo...@fylz.com>
Washington DC & area: Andrea Shettle <red_...@drycas.club.cc.cmu.edu>

/pub/usenet/news.answers/vegetarian/guide in the files canada.Z,

also available in the file /pub/usenet/news.answers/vegetarian/faq.Z.
Note that these files are compressed so you will have to uncompress
them with the UNIX uncompress command.

If that fails, then you can try the mail server. Send an e-mail to

Germany
______________________________________________________________________

Germany has a chain of natural food stores called "Reformhaus". This
chain is not recommended though because the food is expensive and not
"biological" (i.e. comes from 'normal' farmers), and there's always a
| waste of packing material. Look for stores with `Bio-Laeden' or
| `Naturkostladen' in their names, they're usually better.

| Berlin
| ------
|
| There are literally hundreds of health food stores in Berlin,
| especially in districts like Berlin-Kreuzberg, where the `alternative
| culture' is quite popular. There is a health food store or health food
| restaurant on every other street corner.
|
| There is also a wealth of vegetarian restaurants in Berlin. In
| addition Indian restaurants and pizzerias usually serve several
| vegetarian meals. There are numerous Indian restaurants in the center
| of Berlin. It might help to have a look into the Yellow Pages under
| the section `Gaststaetten'.
|
|
| Vegetarian Restaurants:
|
| Hakuin, Martin-Luther-Str. 1, 1000 Berlin 30
| - Probably the most popular vegetarian restaurant in Berlin. It's
| large and expensive. Someone said it has a `Buddhist image'.
|
| Restaurant Thuernagel, Gneisenaustr. 57, 1000 Berlin 61 (Kreuzberg)
| - Inexpensive, customers are mainly young people.
|
| Restaurant/Cafe Tiago, Knesebeckstr. 15, 1000 Berlin 12 (Charlottenburg)
| - Inexpensive, customers are mainly students from the nearby
| university. Ex-`Baghwan' restaurant.
|
| Simsalat, Ansbacher Str. 11, 1000 Berlin 30
| - Salad restaurant, kind of all-you-can-eat salad bar. I don't know
| if it is good.
|
| Hollyfood, Zossener Str. 61, 1000 Berlin 61 (Kreuzberg)
| - Health food snack bar.
|
| ???, Mehringdamm 46, 1000 Berlin 61
| - Health food shop with a snack bar. I have forgotten it's name, but
| it's good.
|
|
| Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:
|
| Maharadscha, Fuggerstr. 21, 1000 Berlin 30
| - Indian. Inexpensive. Central location.
|
| Maharani, Fuggerstr. 18, 1000 Berlin 30
| - Indian. Inexpensive. Directly opposite of Maharadscha, so if you
| don't get a seat in one of them, just cross the road...
|
| India Palace, Leibnizstr. 35, 1000 Berlin 12
| - Indian. Very good vegetarian dishes; central location.
|
| Tandoory, Prinz-Georg-Str. 10, 1000 Berlin 62
| - Indian.
|
| Katschkol, Pestalozzistr. 84, 1000 Berlin 62
| - Afghan cuisine. Central location.
|
|
| Natural Food Stores:
|
| ???, Mehringdamm 46, 1000 Berlin 61
|
| There are at least a dozen health food shops within walking distance
| of Mehringdamm/Zossener Str./Bergmannstr.
|
|
|
| Munich
| ------
|

This is probably the only country in the world where McDonald's sells
a vegetarian burger. It is available at all of the 84 McDonald's

Vegetarian guides are sold everywhere. ex: "Vegetarian Guide to the
Scottish Highlands and Islands", "Vegetarian London", etc.

There are several nationally-circulated vegetarian-oriented magazines
available in any big newsagents that have pages and pages of small
ads.

Wimpy, Burger King, and just about every restaurant chain except for
McDonalds serves a bean burger at its stores in the UK. Also, most
main-line railway stations have a "Casey Jones" burger shop in them,
selling "Mexican Bean Burgers", which are much the same thing again.

Edinburgh
---------

Henderson's, 94 Hanover Street, Tel. 031-225 2131
- Decades-old vegetarian salad restaurant, always reliable quality,
always busy.

Kalpna, St. Patrick's Square, Tel. 031-667 9890
- Good vegetarian Indian (Gujerati) food. Cheap at lunchtime.

Seeds, 53 West Nicolson Street
- Wholefood vegetarian cafe, very small, lots of vegan food.

Suruchi, 14a Nicolson Street, Tel. 031-556 6583
- Newly opened Indian restaurant serving almost exclusively vegetarian
food. Features dishes from a wide variety of Indian regions.

Most vegetarians can and do eat in most restaurants. Restaurants
which don't serve any vegetarian food are few and far between, and
don't prosper, as far as I can see.

pots of tea! Not much vegan unless you book in advance, and you have
to double check the mince pies at Christmas, but the Chestnut and
Mushroom Pie has to be tried!!! Best carrot cake in Britain.
