That is correct. Carl is now working at Roku, as a principal engineer.
Rebol Technologies, I'm guessing, couldn't make enough money from the
products to continue developing and supporting them.

With luck, and a lot of hard work, Red will carry the torch forward.

The current leader in this area is Red. It doesn't have a Linux GUI
yet, and is still Alpha, but it has a lot of pieces in place. It
doesn't have GC yet, so you need to do some extra work if you're
writing long-running apps.

It can compile into a standalone EXE, EXE with external runtime, or in
encap mode, so interpreted internally but still single exe. And it can
cross compile from any platform, to any platform.

Now is a great time to evaluate Red, though you may not want to
produce commercial applications with it yet. Big features are coming
in the next few releases, which will help a lot.

Some fresh news about Rebol:

  • Rebol/Command now free
Rebol/Command and related commercial products will soon become free downloads and no longer require purchasing a license. The schedule for this release depends on the "Building in the Cloud" project below.
