I'm re-posting this email I received:
Dear Colleagues and Fellow Rebets,
This year we celebrate the ELEVENTH edition of our Hydra Rebetiko
Gathering.
Remarkable!
The dates are Thursday evening 13 October to Sunday lunchtime 16
October.
Contrary to the announced publicity, there is no particular theme for
this
year's Gathering.
I can also tell you that things will be more informal this year than
in
previous years.
In other words, there will be some talks in the Melina Mercouri Hall,
but no
formal presentations of papers.
We are in a new situation in Hydra. The old Mayor, with whom we had a
good
collaboration, was voted out. The new Mayor does not like rebetiko and
also
does not like me personally. Since he is apparently not able to reply
to
e-mails, communications this year have been rather difficult. This is
not a
great problem, but it does make it hard for me to organise things from
a
distance.
This year as usual we shall have our wonderful Rebetiko Supper at the
Douskos Restaurant in the centre of the port, on SATURDAY 15 OCTOBER,
starting at 9.00pm.
On Thursday 13th we shall have a jam session at Lulu's Restaurant. On
Friday
14th, a jam session at another restaurant. And on Sunday 16 October,
our
usual open-air jam session at one of the bars in the harbour area.
Furthermore on Monday 17 October, our wonderful santur player Peyman
Heydarian will be doing a concert in Athens (details to be announced).
As regards accommodation, probably the best approach is simply to
arrive on
the island and find rooms when you arrive. It is slightly out of
season, so
there will be plenty of rooms available.
If you have any questions about the Gathering, do feel free to ask.
ALSO: I take this opportunity to inform you that I am planning for a
MEGA
HYDRA REBETIKO GATHERING in October 2012. The date will be 20-21
October, so
put it in your diaries. That will include the usual music-making
activities,
plus a full formal conference.
That event will be preceded by the Hydra Donkey Conference on the
previous
weekend of 13-14 October 2012.
With rebetological greetings,
Ed Emery
