Ο Μεμέτης (Α 24)

- Πω πω πω πω!

…………… γουστάρουμε.

Nice lot of easy aman aman...

- Πω πω πω πω! Geia sou my _(word missing)_
Geai sou my _(word missing)_, my legend !
My Memeti, my memeti aman aman
with I get over all of my woes
Where are you going my Memeti, where are you going aman aman
and deserting me
Where are you going Memeti & Mario ?,
Violins are 'banging' (playing) & I'm going to watch (literally
"see")
I'm Memeti the σεβνταλής, aman aman
Magka sthn triha, meraklis
Geia sou my little Arabian, geia sou
I smoke "tsika"(?) and arghile aman aman
and sing thewith pain the manes (aka "amanes" - the "aman aman" songs)
And when I smoke the cone, aman aman
I "break" my woes with the bagalama
With Mario we smoked, aman aman

this is from the booklet of “The Rebetiko Song in America vol.1, FM
627 (the missing words):
γεια σου Λειβαδίτη μου! γεια σου ρε Γιάννη Λειβαδίτη λεβέντη μου!
last line: το σύμπαν κογιονάρουμε, but I have no idea what this is.

From It. "coglione / coglionare", with a semantic shift. In this case,
not to give a shit about anything at all.

No, it's Dimitris Arapakis ( http://www.rebetiko.gr/en/kalitexnis.asp?
id=152 )

Besides, an arapáki is not an Arabian but a Negro.

since I do not have an italian dictionary, what is the meaning of
coglionare? the greek meaning is to fool someone, to cheat one.

Just the same meaning: To fool or con someone.
As used in the song, though (with σύμπαν) they are not being that
precise.

My understanding, from the late Dino Pappas, is that this version of
Memetis (with the long cimbalum introduction) was part of a series of
recordings made in Greece but released specifically for the American
Greek market, under the general direction of Tetos Demetriades. This
recording was also used as background in the remake of the classic
film "The Postman Aways Rings Twice" - Dino Pappas had lent several of
his 78s for the film for it's Greek immigrant character. There were
several other 1930s recordings of Memetis in Greece, but I feel this
one was the classic. My most exciting memory of the song is from about
30 years ago when the late great Vangelis Perpiniades sang it at the
short lived Athens by Night nightclub in Boston

It had the song in its current state, and a paragraph about something
else I thought you should see, which I have no backup of. Curse you
Google!

Memetis (A 24)

- Po, po, po, po! Your health, my...

- Your health... my, levendis!

My Memeti, my Memeti, Aman Aman,
with you I get over my woes.

Where are you going, my Memeti, where are you going, Aman Aman,
and why are you abandoning me?

Where are you going, Memeti and Mario, Aman Aman,
Violins are "banging" and I'm going to see.

I'm Memeti the sevdalis, Aman Aman,
Mangas in tricha, meraklis.

- Your health, my little Arabian, your health!

I smoke tsika and arghile, Aman Aman,
I sing Amanes with pain.

And when I smoke the bowl, Aman Aman,
I break my woes with the baglama.

With Mario we smoked, Aman Aman,
............... we enjoyed it.
