Many thanks for the word, and for all the lovely music too. And those
photos!
I know a woman from Mytilene here in Seattle, but she doesn't recall
that lovely old music (I played one of the 'Lesvos Aiolis' CDs for her,
which is much heard in this house). But then, she left to marry a
singer/guitarist who preferred more modern music - when he wasn't
amusing some manges with old rebetika for xartoura.
If you didnt grow up in a village of Mytillini you had less chance to
get exposed to this wonderfull music.
These days only some villages stand up keeping the traditional music
still alive and its Agiassos
with is "Anagnostirio" ( http://www.aegean.gr/anagnostirio/ ) all other
villages dont do much.
A lighthouse is the musical Gymnasioum which teach traditional music
http://www.mousiko.tk/
All others are 4 stringed bouzouki oriented players...that hardly know
the tunes i posted....
Here is a photo of the group of the Anagnostiou of Agiasos
when we invited them to play at my municipality GERA Lesvos last summer
on the 2rd pic you can see the locals dancing the most popular dance of
Lesvos
Karsilama [Karsi = across] actually they are dancing across!
on the 3rd the group of youngsters, I formed playing exlusively songs
of Lesvos
with my duaghter (12 years old) on the santouri (many are songs from
the above list)
http://www.iera.gr/efimerida/59/8/ekdilosis.htm
The only ones left to pass this stuff to the next generation
is Nikos Kalaitzis or "Bindagialas" (now 82) through his recordings
and Dimitris Kofteros via the santouri and as teacher of it.
He also played together 2 years with the newer rebetiko group
Athinaiki Compania
If your patience in not lost yes
here is a small video i took in the ferry boat Theophilos of
Nikos Kalaitzis and Dim Kofteros on santour
Xristos Papanikolaou on guitar (the permanent guitarist of Zampeta 'how
much i admire his guitar playing!')
Grigoris Vasilas a great young trihordo bouzouki player from the new
group "DROMOS"
and the vocal Kostas Kaldelis (all from Lesvos)
