Geia sas,

Spiros and I are looking into getting the film Rembetiko. But while
looking on youtube, I found something called "To Minore Tis Avgis.
It's apparently a TV series. Does anyone know anything about it? Is
it good and can it be easily bought or should we just stick with
youtube on this one? Can anyone recommend any other good rebetika
documentaries? Also still looking for general films with manga
characters featured in them.

Thanks,
Tiffanitsa

Hi Tiffany,

I watched about 12 episodes on youtubes. The user who loaded them made
it so that you when 1 episode finishe, the net automatically starts.
I thought it looke duite interesitng and some of the song renditions
quite fun to watch - I understand that the group who performs them/
most of them is the Athinaiki Compania (?) This film has magka
characters in it.

There is wa way to d/load youttbue clips & then ae able to play them
off line. You can also then convert them to dvd etc, but that's more
technical than I. I'd also be curious of other movies

Ok, here's something interesting. Spiros told me that he knew of this
one actor who played a stereotypical manga in many films. We didn't
know his name, but he remembered that one of the guys who's usually in
these films is Vegos. We found both of them.

The guy first reading the menu is Vegos. The other one doesn't have a
mustache in this video but he does in many others (not on youtube).
So does anyone know who he is? I know that some of the real rebetes
appeared in films. Can you tell me where?

So last night, we started watching Tou Minore Tis Avgis and aside from
one part (part 3 of episode 1) not working, it was pretty good. I
didn't know Mouflouzelis was in it. How old was he here? I don't
know much about him. Does anyone know in what year the series was
made?

Tiffany, the series was made in 1983. I think it is an excellent
effort to portray a time which has gone forever. I speak as a complete
non-expert on this subject though (nor any other for that matter), but
compared to one or two others I have had the misfortune to watch, this
one is good. I didn't know that Mouflouzelis was in it either. he
doesn't appear in the cast list. The series, a collection of 14 CDs,
is available on eBay at around $95 plus postage, from Greece. It is
also available for download on one or two sites, but we wouldn't want
to get involved in such things would we?
