Geia sas,

Does anyone know of a good site where I can find rebetika and old
laika torrents? I know there used to be Greektorrents.com, but of
course, that's long gone. A suitable replacement would be great.

Thanks,
Tiffanitsa

What are "torrents" in this context?  "Insults"?

tor·rent
n.
  1. A turbulent, swift-flowing stream.
  2. A heavy downpour; a deluge.
  3. A heavy, uncontrolled outpouring: a torrent of insults; torrents of mail.

*smile* No, they're 4. A way of downloading music. You basically
have a client (mine is ABC BitTorrent) and you go on a site, search
for what you want, and download. It's not exactly like the
file-sharing programmes Kazaa, but the explanation is a bit technical
and beyond my understanding. I think it takes the file from multiple
places at once to make the download faster, instead of just relying on
one source, and that's why you here seeders and leechers.

Tiffany, we all had http://rebetiko.sealabs.net for quite some years.
A site with over 6.000 available titles (traditional, Smyrna school,
rebetiko, laiko) from the beginning of discography until such time as
copyright issues start bringing potential danger to the administrators
(approx. 50 years back). And it's free! But for perhaps over one
month the site is not functioning. When (and if) it becomes
functional again, you will need someone understanding Greek to help
you register.

I had Chris help me try to sign up, but even he couldn't get in. We
tried signing me up and then him. We'd create the account, and every
time we tried to sign in, it would give us an error message. This was
a few months ago, so I guess we could try again. At one time, I
signed up using an online translator, and although it let me sign in,
I could never look up songs/artists etc. When I'd do that, it kept
sending me back to signin. The only way I was ever able to use that
site was as a grab bag. I downloaded whatever songs were on the main
page each time I visited. It's a shame, cause that place truly is a
Greek music paradise.

I actually found something that works for me! If you go to
http://www.jfwlite.com
and click on programs, you'll find something called Bearshare Lite.
When you try to click on their homepage, that particular one isn't
there and they're offering a new version. It's not called Lite, so
I'm not sure if it's free. However, the Lite can be found on the
jfwlite site. Btw, they have lots of good rebetika!

Later,
Tiffanitsa

even myself, as a greek, had problems registering or having myself
reckognized each time i visited. Well, the main point is that they
should come back again, then you should certainly give it a second
try. Perhaps I could help if you have a Skype connection.

Well, getting to talk to a Greek on Skype makes me want to go and
redownload it! lol Thanks for brightening my day, and glad I'm not
the only one who had problems with sealabs. But I'll definitely try
it again once it's back. As for Bearshare, after a golden moment of
happiness, I found that it's inaccessible just like all the others
because they make you use a new version and then try to upgrade to the
new Windows Media Player, which i hate with a passion. But they
could've tried upgrading realplayer8, which is equal to breaking my
bouzouki, because then I couldn't listen to the audio portion of my
Greek lessons and I'd get re'e'e'eally mad! One year of not having
them was quite enough for me thank you. So now I'm betting with
myself. Will I find an original rebetis or a program/torrent site to
download rebetika first? I'm betting on the rebetis. Then again, if
I find one of those, rushing off to download stuff will be the last
thing on my mind, though I might need a tongue-untying program and a
camera so you guys would believe me. lol Ah well, back to live365 for
me. Maybe, I'll find something good there. Thanks to everyone for
your patience and understanding. It helps to have good friends.

Tiffany I think it would be decent of you to answer the email I sent
you, or to at least answer the question I asked you on the group as to
whether you had received that email.
