Pilipinong Pari ni Kristo: A Book Review

Pilipinong Pari ni Kristo (Filipino Priest of Christ) is a book written by Fr. Jose Antonio E. Aureada, OP, a Dominican priest and theologian. The book is a collection of essays that reflect on the identity, mission, and challenges of Filipino priests in the context of the Philippine Church and society.

The book covers various topics such as the history and spirituality of Filipino priests, the role of priests in social transformation, the pastoral care of migrants and indigenous peoples, the dialogue with other religions and cultures, and the formation and renewal of priests. The book also offers insights and recommendations on how Filipino priests can respond to the signs of the times and be faithful witnesses of Christ in their ministry.

Pilipinong Pari ni Kristo is a valuable resource for priests, seminarians, lay leaders, and anyone who wants to learn more about the Filipino clergy and their contribution to the Church and the nation. The book is written in Filipino with some English translations. It is available in PDF format for free download from the website of the University of Santo Tomas Ecclesiastical Faculties.

One of the highlights of the book is the chapter on the Filipino priest as a "bayani" (hero). Fr. Aureada argues that the Filipino priest is called to be a hero not in the sense of being a superhero or a martyr, but in the sense of being a servant-leader who sacrifices for the common good and inspires others to do the same. He cites examples of Filipino priests who have exemplified this heroic spirit, such as Fr. Jose Burgos, Fr. Pedro Calungsod, Fr. Lorenzo Ruiz, and Fr. Rudy Romano.

Another interesting chapter is the one on the Filipino priest as a "dalubhasa" (expert). Fr. Aureada emphasizes that the Filipino priest is expected to be competent and proficient in his field of study and ministry. He challenges Filipino priests to pursue academic excellence and lifelong learning, as well as to share their knowledge and skills with others, especially the poor and marginalized. He also encourages Filipino priests to engage in interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue with other scholars and practitioners from different fields and backgrounds.

The book also contains a chapter on the Filipino priest as a "kaibigan" (friend). Fr. Aureada explores the meaning and importance of friendship for the Filipino priest, both in his personal and professional life. He affirms that friendship is a gift from God and a source of joy and support for the priest. He also warns against the dangers of loneliness and isolation that can affect the priest's mental and emotional health. He suggests ways on how Filipino priests can cultivate and maintain healthy and meaningful friendships with God, with their fellow priests, and with their lay collaborators and parishioners.
