First and foremost let me tell you that I love you all!
I never expected that there would be this level of desire and
commitment for this group.
First let me clear two things up.
1. This was never a Propellerhead driven marketing tactic. This was my
own idea and project. If they had or have been involved directly, then
the issues that have arisen would have no relevance.
2. The users group will absolutely, positively have meetings again. A
number of situations have arisen that I am/have been dealing with.
So,......Here's what's been going on
1. The space in Williamsburg is no longer going to work. Everyone is
feeling the burn of the economy and 303 Grand is no different. They
have had to raise their rental prices substantially, to the point that
a $15 chip in from everyone will no longer cover the costs. In fact,
for the last event, I did this with a modified pricing and had to pick
up some of the slack myself. When I started this Users group, I wanted
to make it something that was accessible and affordable for all. I
refuse to modify that aspect of the group. I have no ill will or bad
feelings to my friends at 303 as they have to do what's going to help
them survive. In addition, I took public transportation to get there
and saw what a trek it was. I thank all of you for making the effort
to get there, but also realized that this would be more accessible to
have a location in the city.
2. After the last event I went into double-duty at the school. 90% of
the teaching staff went out to the Burning Man festival for an
extended stay of 4-6 weeks. I picked up every single class, private
lesson, workshop, teaching assistant, and open house event that I
could. This required my involvement 7 days a week and had me many days/
weeks opening and closing the school, leaving little time for else. I
accepted any opportunity that was thrown my way. I needed to establish
myself there and make myself an integral part in the day to day
operations, and I feel as if I have accomplished this. In fact, when
the other instructors returned, I was kept on to teach their classes
as everyone was happy with things the way that they were. Things are
retuning to "normal" there now though, and time is returning to
me.......
3. In Mid-September I was offered the opportunity to get teaching
certification in Live from Ableton, directly from the Berlin office.
This is something that I have wanted and felt that I need, but the
cost is not something that I would be able to afford. Dubspot offered
to help out on the condition that I absolutely must take this very
seriously and pass the certification. I have been in Ableton Live
"Boot Camp" for the past month as they are not just giving the
certification away and require a month's worth of outside prep for the
application process as well as the 2 day 20 hour weekend event. The
actual certification event required demonstrations/presentations
testing and meetings to determine if I was indeed a qualified
certified expert in Live by their standards. Although I have been
using Live for certain things and applications over the years, I in no
way considered myself at the expert level of understanding that I do
with Reason. I was actually quite nervous about this, and have spent
an unmeasurable number of hours reading their manuals, watching
tutorial videos, working with the program, and hanging with experts
soaking up as much knowledge as I can. The good news is that I passed
it and got the certification last weekend.
So,....now I refocus on the task at hand of making this users group
happen again on a regular and consistent basis.
On deciding where and how this is going to happen next, I have
evaluated the criteria necessary for these events.
Needed are:
1. A comfortable space that is accessible to all
2. Projector and screen, which I don't own
3. A sound system, which I don't own
Rental of the projector and sound system alone would create major
obstacles.....
The ideal location for this would be a music school in the city that
has a classroom with the necessary items.
As you all may remember, we had the first one at Dubspot. I felt that
this was not the optimum location. It was cramped and had a lab time
going on simultaneously, and we had to be out at the stroke of 9pm.
There is a second floor that is now in there possession, but the
wheels are moving slower than I would have hoped for to make this
happen.
In a perfect world this is where I would do it......
We don't live in a perfect world though;-(
Moving forward.......
There is a location that i have my sites set on for the next meeting.
It is another music school.
I have had tremendous fear of doing this as with everything else in
NYC, music schools and education is very competitive.
My fear has been that I would ruffle feathers and possibly jeopardize
my new job, by teaching closely related material at another school
that's in NYC.
This has really been the single biggest roadblock in my way.
Now, after the time and dedication that I have exhibited to Dubspot
over the past few months, I can say that I don't believe that this
will be a problem. I hope......
I am now at a comfort level with them that I could only achieve by
making myself a fixture there over the past few months, and if
problems arise, I think we can work thru this.
My intent is to have the next meeting towards the end of November.
I will send out an official announcement when things are definite and
solidified.
In reality, I have only missed events for two months. I didn't intend
on having to relocate so quickly and it caught me off guard
Again, I am really happy to see that everyone is so animate about
continuing forward.
I have had a blast doing these events, and it seems like most of you
have gotten quite a bit out of them.
I apologize to everyone for being so aloof. I didn't fall of the face
of the earth or go into the witness relocation program.
I've just had a lot on my plate and have not been keeping track of
time the way that I should have.
I wanted to make my next response to the group a notification of the
next event, but being that all the stars are not in alignment yet, I
can't make the official announcement.
So again, I hope that everyone is well and clear that this will be a
regular ongoing event and was merely on hold temporarily for
unexpected circumstances.
Be well!
and
stay tuned
Best Regards,
Chris
