Hello,

I recently realized that the titles of the news items on our News & Events minisite doesn't appear in the page title: https://www.beloit.edu/news/?story_id=503525

Compare this to the campus news on the Terarrium minisite where the item title does appear: https://www.beloit.edu/campus/news/?story_id=503434

I went and compared these in the ways I could, and for News & Events:
  • Same settings as the Terrarium publication.
  • Same page type as the Terrarium page.
  • Same page title patterns as the Terrarium page.
  • Different theme than Terrarium, but shouldn't conflict.
  • Same theme as another minisite which works as intended.

Is there another place I should be looking for differences?  Any ideas what the cause may be?

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,

Is this resolved?  I see titles on both posts.

Hello,

No, but I see I may need to clarify.

By "page title", I mean the title the browser uses for the page which appears in the tab the page is loaded into.  It is the title that also appears in Google Analytics under "Page Title".

The issue is that for News & Events, without the item title, all stories share the same page title.  Not good for SEO for tracking in Analytics, I'm thinking...

Thanks,
Nick

Now I do see what you mean.  I am somewhat stabbing at things, but wonder about the following:

  • Maybe they are using different modules for some reason and settings vary there.
  • I assume when you say the publication settings are the same, you mean in the Reason backend?  (Same publication type - Blog vs Newsletter.)
  • Have you done troubleshooting with files on the server that are being used?  I have a feeling it might be in the code somewhere if everything is the same when looking in Reason itself.

Apologies for the double post, but I have an image which may help show the issue.

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,

Oh! I think this might be the same issue I ran into last year. When a publication lives on a site’s homepage, Reason uses the home title pattern for page titles, rather than the item title pattern. The solution is to add [item_name] to the home title pattern for that site.

Hello,

Thank you Steve.  That is tricky... >_>

Alright, so we have the item title appearing the in the "page title" now, but what about the listing pages?  For instance, the main page now has "News & Events | News & Events | Beloit College" for its title, or a pattern of "[page_title] | [minisite_name] | [organization_name]".  That's somewhat redundant...

I ran into this system once before, so I know that the "item_name" option is based on the page's crumbs.  Since there is not an news item being appended to the crumbs, I assume its defaulting to the last item that is in the crumbs: the current page.

Thoughts?  Is it odd practice to put a publication on the main page of a minisite?  Is this something which might prompt some improvements to the system?  ("If item, use item, else main.")

Thanks,
Nick

This is fixed in 4.8, I believe.

Ah, that saves me the trouble of hunting that down...

Thanks Steve.  I've patched that in for now.

Thanks all for the assistance. ;D
