sorry for the cross-post, but this is something I think all parties
should be aware of. I have been asked to give a short presentation
plus Q&A on Opensim, Openviewer, and RealXtend (focus on Next Gen
plans). This is at a meeting of the Web3D consortium, the folks
behind X3D (and now Collada). Here's a link to the meeting
announcement:

My talk is on the "Emerging Web3D Applications".
I think it's import to have dialogue among the disparate people
working towards a 3D-enabled web. The goals and motivations may be
different, but it's all going to intersect at some point. I would
hate to see a tower of babel situation such as transpired in the
audio/video world.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Not exactly -- I may have got that wrong:
so I guess they're just trying to be friendly and play along.
X3D claims it is more than just an exchange format -- they have lots
of real-time behavior stuff, avatars (H-anim), etc. There have been
SL-like worlds built around it. I suppose from our perspective it's
YAP (Yet Another Protocol) to be aware of. It's also got some
funding, and it represents some sort of official standard. Whether it
ends up mattering is debatable, but I think it's worthwhile to
understand their process. Eventually, all this stuff needs to play
together.
It's also an opportunity to get people who are interested in web/3D
synergy to see what we're doing.
