Hi, I'm currently making a kind of geochat web application for Android/
iPhone where I display a map with other users near you. What would be
the best approach to implement chat functionality:

1. Use Google Talk Gadget. Will it work under Android/iPhone? I know
these devices are not listed in supported browsers list, but still :)
Are there any plans to support them?

2. Use native Google Talk on these platforms. If so, how?

3. Something else?

Thanks, Vlad.

How, exactly, would you start a chat with someone?

Actually, it sounds like you want to mashup google talk and google
latitude - which would be cool if google ever actually releases a
latitude API (HINT google...). I'd use the app you are talking about
in a second...

I was thinking about displaying a iframe/div in a map infowindow with
something like this:

http://dreaming.google.com/chat?user1=x...@gmail.com&user2=a...@gmail.com

ideally user should be able to chat with other users near by (not
necessarily his contacts)...

So what you really want is a sort of geographically limited chat
room... Which is a cool idea...

I guess the big question is this - would people want to get chat
requests from complete strangers just because they are near them? I'm
sure that the answer is yes for quite a few people.

You might try accessing the current position the user using one of the
online services (I think Yahoo Fire Eagle as an API, but I might be
wrong) and using that to match up the people that are registered....
It might require some server side programming to hold the data of
where you are in relation to where other users are, but once that is
done, you can pop up chats with others near you...

Google talk proably won't work, since you can't really control who it
connects to and it would require the person to be on the others
contact list, but there might be other chat clients you could use...
