Concept confusion

I am confused. This may not be the best forum for my question;
however, Realtime Gadgets is proposing a game use case. If I use
GoogleTalk as an XMPP server for network communication for a game, how
do you find players? Does this necessitate a pre-agreement between
known players to join a game? Or is there some XMPP status query that
can determine who is available to play?

I am thinking of how FPS servers work. They list available servers
with players. How does this translate to a Google Talk use case. My
application could set a status but how do you arrange to meet players?
