(newbie) launching an extenal app

Hello,
i'm building kind of an app-launcher.
programming it on macox (leopard) but in the end, it needs to run on
ubuntu.
As i am a complete newbie, and i can't find anything that works ...
i tried code with f.launch and stuff. but this doesn't even startup
osx
applications.
so i'm looking how i can add code that will launch f.e. calculator in
ubuntu from within the RB app.
