Hi Chris & Eugene,

I understand what you mean, but this is a good sign as well because it demonstrates our Reality systems are rock solid stable, working away, serving their purposes and requiring minimal intervention.

Reality v14 is EOL soon and we are assisting our customer’s with their Reality v15 upgrades on Unix, Linux and Windows based servers with all going smoothly.

We are actually working on a SUN/Solaris to VMware/Linux migration and v15 upgrade today for one site and then we have two more sites to go and we will have completed all of our customer’s v15 upgrades.

Just FYI, we are working with a Reality v2 customer site still operating a Spirit system and the fact that this system is still working away for them is another testament to the stability of Reality!

We are converting them to our ForeMost ERP solution and we’ll be bringing them up on a pair of real-time updated, Reality v15 Windows based, production and back-up servers.

Share your questions.

Best Regards,

Doug

Eugene,

Agreed.  I occasionally have questions for the group, but I hesitate to bring them up until I am at my wit’s end.  Most of the time, the question gets answered before that occurs.

The next time one comes up, I will post post-haste.

Subject: Lack of activity

Hello,

It has been a very long time since I used Reality.  I would like to keep up with what is going with that version.  I use several other versions of mv.

I have noticed that there something like 10 posts over the last two years.

I look most days to see if there is any activity.

The lack of activity is not good from a marketing viewpoint.  If people come here to see what is going on with Reality they might get the wrong impression.

Thanks

Eugene

We are getting error messages like the one below:

We have existing connections to our REALITY V14 server that work just fine.  We have 90 available licenses, but are only using 72 at present.  Can anyone explain why this might be happening?

Our contact for such things seems to be out of touch at present.

Does the Reality daemon log shed any clues?  Do you have logons enabled for regular users?

We do have logons enabled for regular users.

We have opted to restart our server as a first step.

Hi Chris,

May seem fundamental & obvious – 2 items I’d check before restarting the Reality server

-          Are you getting that error when trying to connect from multiple devices ?

-          Have those devices connected to Reality previously?

Just you mentioned having existing Reality 14 connections that are working ok

It may be connectivity issues on the connecting device & not the Reality side at all!

Have you tried simply ping’ing the Reality server from the connecting device – ruling out potential network connectivity issues

ALL:

Other usage:

A) tiphs (Reality)phantoms are NOT used by the traditional (non Reality) "logon"... which will consume a NORMAL license.

B)  If you have 10 printers and you add 2, the licensing mechanism will use use up the 10 printers FIRST then 2 normal licenses next.

C) And there can be HUNG processes were someopne turned off a PC without logging out.  When they power up and restart a second (or more license) is consumed ... provided you are using pooled logins.  FIXED IP/logins would stop the login on the original port/license.  You have a wide variety of choices to handle users.

If not already present, create a special Reality file via MAKE-SPECIAL with a keyword LICENCE to be able to view & monitor the current status of licensed port usage and availability.  Gives a good summary and shows where the tie up is between users, TIPHs, printers or any other Reality services.

On V15, I believe is now already pre-created in SYSFILES as REALITY-LICENCE.  Can’t recall if it was pre-created yet on V14.

Everyone,

Thanks for the help on this.

Currently, Realdbck is running.  We’ll look in the logs when we back up and running.

Hi Chris,

May seem fundamental & obvious – 2 items I’d check before restarting the Reality server

-          Are you getting that error when trying to connect from multiple devices ?

Yes

-          Have those devices connected to Reality previously?

Yes.

Just you mentioned having existing Reality 14 connections that are working ok

It may be connectivity issues on the connecting device & not the Reality side at all!

Have you tried simply ping’ing the Reality server from the connecting device – ruling out potential network connectivity issues

Ping was successful.

Chris,

As David has indicated the issue should be highlighted in the daemon.log and/or in the SESSION.LOG/EVENT.LOG  files.

If you log this as a support call with Reality Support (reality...@ngahr.net) then one of the techs will be able to help, but they will need these files to diagnose the issue. If the error is not reported in these files then the most likely cause is the connection string is incorrect and it's not even getting to the Reality server. Also what are you trying to connect when you are experiencing the error? What are the connection details you are supplying?

You might have a look to see if smanager is still running. It sounds to me
like your TCP/IP connection is just being refused and that you aren't
getting as far as Reality. Have a look at the session and event logs.

Sorry, I tried to reply yesterday google wasn't playing ball. Hopefully it will work today.

Dave.

Is there any software around that turns a Reality program into an app?

Not that I know of Mike...

You could:
  • Use a web interface, either into Reality on the intranet or Internet that uses a browser App to access it.
  • Put the Reality DataBase into the Cloud.
  • You currently can't isolate "a program" from the Reality Database, or run Reality as an App only interface to it.

Alan
