Good Morning!
The past couple of weeks, I have been writing about what I feel are the benefits--both from a nutritional and a sustainability standpoint--of selecting organic foods as often as possible.
This week I want to share with you once again the list of the Dirty Dozen, the Environmental Working Group's list of foods that contain the most pesticides. The Environmental Working group is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the public health and the environment. In this role, they simulated thousands of consumers eating high and low pesticide diets, which showed that people can lower their pesticide exposure by almost 80 percent by avoiding the top twelve most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating the least contaminated instead! That's why I believe that a repeated sharing of this list is so important.
It may be difficult to have all of the fruits and vegetables you purchase be organically grown. That being the case, the list of the Dirty Dozen provides you with a great guideline as to which foods should be at the top of your list of organic choices.
The Dirty Dozen-- a list of the 12 foods highest in pesticide residues (#1 being the most contaminated):
  1. peach
  2. apple
  3. bell pepper
  4. celery
  5. nectarine
  6. strawberries
  7. cherries
  8. kale
  9. lettuce
  10. grapes (imported)
  11. carrot
  12. pear
12 Foods lowest in pesticide residues (#1 being the least contaminated):
  1. onion
  2. avocado
  3. sweet corn
  4. pineapple
  5. mango
  6. asparagus
  7. sweet peas
  8. kiwi
  9. cabbage
  10. eggplant
  11. papaya
  12. watermelon

Food of the Week . . . Cucumbers
Did you know that cucumbers have actually been found to be up to 20 degrees cooler than the outside air? It's no wonder that we want to be "cool as a cucumber" during the hot summer months! Cucumbers are great for healthy skin--from both inside and out. While it may be recommended to add cucumbers to your diet to improve the complexion and health of the skin, cucumbers are also used topically to reduce swelling under the eyes and the effects of sunburn. And for an extra boost of vitamin A, C and potassium, add cucumbers to your favorite summer salads and sandwiches. If you choose organic cucumbers, leave the skin on for extra nutrition--all you have to do is slice and serve!Read More ...

I am absolutely over the moon after finding George Mateljan on Internet during 2008. While I put off purchasing his book, his daily postings via email are always so interesting and full of well researched information that I became convinced to just buy the book. Man am I pleased I did so for it is a truly a gem amongst gems. Although my wife & I were in general already living a healthy lifestyle, with the information now at our finger tips we have become so much more conscious of continual improvement. Following two tours of duty in Vietnam I have had gut & digestion issues since returning home. Following a good deal of internet searching and a heightened awareness of the negative aspects of proton inhibitors, I made a decision to get myself off Prilosec. The first week was a week from hell, but now every day I am experiencing more and more improvement with gratitude to George Mateljan's book. I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending this book to anyone seeking greater awareness of healthy foods and speeding their journey to living a healthier and longer life. - SM
