I've no idea how these forums work, and not even sure I am doing this
right. That said, You two have yet to check out http://talesfromamotel.blogspot.com
which is my actual "writing" project, if you can call it that. I would
love feedback from both of you. I am planning on starting up a bi-
weekly or monthly plot-line. A Blook, if you will. And, Glen, if I
were able I would have a daily cocktail around lunchtime to wash down
my stress and frustrations. But, I think there is some law forbidding
this...unless you own your own business, which I do not.

Scott, I'm going there right now! Gee, this discussion thing CAN be
helpful!! (By the way, have you looked into BookRix.com? It's a
terrific site for writers who may or may not also be bloggers.
Fabulous connections to editors and whatnot, too. You ought to check
it out!)

Hello to all:

This location for the group is not working. See, my take on a group location is that the group features should work harder than I have to. The view and layout is different each time I visit. When I visit, I am taken to the old format. Then I have to make an effort to get here, at the new format. Now, I find myself working too hard at finding a way to post a new topic. This is my new topic. I put it here based on a coin toss.

Is anyone interested in switching over to LinkedIn and creating a group way over there? Who, what, where, and when? Give me a shout and I'll join you at LinkedIn.

Not sure why this did not occur to me when the subject was first introduced on FaceBook.

I still vote for Delphi Forums or Yahoo Groups. LinkedIn feels a
little too tightly linked to the real world for me.

Hi all:

I firmly believe there is a conspiracy to coerce me (just me, hah!) into trying out their new beta projects. As soon as I posted my previous post (elsewhere in this group) Google directed me to their new Circles and such feature.

I bit.

Two of you will receive invitations to try out the new feature in a circle I created. That's because I only have two of you in my contacts list. So far.

My hope is that it works out well beyond our expectations in getting together.

I am totally not sure how I have to get you in. So, if one of you has the list of members, and can contact them, why not make a new Circle? (Or we can try to use the one I made, and I can edit the name of the Circle.)

Wups. My next post  shows up higher on the discussion thread. My, oh, my. There has to be a better way. I feel blind on this forum. And deaf.

Google+ is pretty basic, I add you to my circles and you add me to
yours and we all have our own "RBU" circles with everybody in
them...in the ideal world.

The first step is how to know which "Maria Davis" you are. I'm pretty
easy to search out as there are exactly, um one "Maureen Blaseckie" on
Google+. For those sharing their name with more folk, information in
the profile helps. I'd suggest that we all make sure our profiles
indicate we contribute to Real Bloggers United. There is a side column
in the profile to put blog links and there is a category for web pages
etc. that you contribute to.

If enough of us start adding other RBU bloggers to our circles, it
will be easier to track everyone down.

My 2.5 cents (CAD) worth. (Feel free to add me to your circles, by the
way and I'll add you to mine)...

But I do want to add that Google Groups is pretty straightforward. It
is a simple discussion group on the old listserv model. The advantage
of going through facebook or google+ is that free group chats can
happen either spontaneously or at scheduled times.

Add another .5 cents to the meter boys...

I still think that we need the basic tools of a discussion forum. Easy
management of hundreds or thousands of threads, grouping by major
topics, a memory of what posts you've already read and what posts you
haven't so that you don't have to keep scrolling past what you've
already read, easy bouncing back to the post being replied to...
Everything in use so far seems likely to max out at maybe a few
hundred posts before they become unmanageable. I'm imagining something
that supports more discussion than that.

To see what features Delphi Forums offers, I created a forum, Rambling
Chat,

http://forums.delphiforums.com/ramblingchat/messages.

If anyone wants to play with it, you're welcome to wander over and
post. (I have it on moderation, but I think I can easily take
individuals off moderation when they post their first post.)

No, I'm not proposing this as the blogging forum, I'm just trying to
demonstrate what forum features can be had, as I continue to begbegbeg
for a forum with those features. :)

Just a quick note to let you know that I have not been ignoring you
all. There's a lot going on in my 'real' life right now. Just made
it through a wildfire, husband in China until October 2, and my mother
had a stroke on Monday. My head feels like it's about to explode but
I have been reading all the updates to this and am planning to look
into the Delphi thing sometime this week (of course, I just realized
it's Thursday...the days have all sorta melded into one very long,
taxing day with momentary lapses where the sun seems to disappear only
to reappear a few minutes after I close my eyes) But like I said, I'm
working on it.

Also, feel free to direct issues to Glen Staples or Antony Waller as
they're managing editors for RBU and can probably set up stuff just as
easily as I can and I trust their judgement 100%. Hopefully they both
remember the 'username' and 'password' as I'm pretty darn sure I
didn't change them!

I'll be checking in soon. Hopefully later today to see what's up and
maybe to jump into Delphi with both feet as it sounds promising.

Cordially,
Avery

Well, now! I clicked the link and got my own circle. Bah! So then, it says I can add people by searching for them by.... what?...email? I have no email addresses. Worse yet, there is a limit of 150 people I can add to my own circle. Thinking about that, it is hard to imagine how to keep up with three people, much less 150.

  • I will update my profile to show the RBU group
  • And check out the Delphi link.
  • And keep an eye out for the leaders

Avery, it sounds like you have far, far more important things to do
than this. My whining isn't about "Hurry up!" but, "Uh, I'm not sure
this particularly technology is working; do you want to invest time in
it?" Reconsidering the technology needn't happen Right This Minute.
Take care of yourself; don't add to your stress by letting me make you
feel pressured.

Hello - yes sorry, I did mean to join in the conversation earlier, but
I'm really forum unfriendly.

I don't know what the best way ahead is, so I can't really put much
input in, other than I really don't want to use Linked in for it.

What I do need to do is spend some time going through and making sure
all members are invited and work from there.

As i said before - I tried Delphi but just couldn't work it out. If
someone happier with that side of things can work it all out then
cool.

Personally, my understanding and level of interest in forums is
minimal so I'm really not the right person to ask :-(

I'll do what i can though - because I'm feeling guilty about leaving
it to Avery ...

Glen.

Yes, Avery, please take care of yourself. Nothing is more important.
Current times and circumstances under which we function are difficult.
Unexpected life changing events are especially daunting.

I see that the group is in good hands. Nothing will run amok while you
wend your way through the challenges hurled your way. Personally, I do
not expect you to reply until you are good and ready.

Here is my own best guess of the day: This group, RBU, has depth of
talent that comes from the collective challenges we have faced, have
yet to face, or are facing. I see it in the rich content on the blog.

Take care,
Marla

Glen, I think I found answers to all of the issues that you had with
Delphi, but I don't remember if I brought that back here, at least not
very specifically. :) I configured my test Delphi forum to moderate
new posts, and I confirmed that it's possible to take a user off
moderation so that once they're trusted, there's no moderation delay.
I believe it's also possible to hide the whole forum, but I don't
think that's what's wanted?

If you'd like to either discuss (by email if this format isn't working
well) and/or wander over to my test forum to play with it, I'd be
happy to go over the details. If the conclusion is for Delphi Forums,
maybe I could get a forum configured and then hand over ownership?

There is something called TRIBERR.com, which I am a part of. I do not
go there much as it's twitter based, I think, but worth a look maybe.
