Hello Robin,

I am pleased to invite you to join Pennsylvania Interfaith Power and Light (PA IPL), the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), and the community of hundreds of past and future planters and volunteers in ordering FREE native trees and shrubs for Fall 2023.

This act of hope, faith, and healing will contribute to sequestration of the excess carbon dioxide in our atmosphere that is changing our global weather. It can help clean the befouled air that we humans have created that is making the most vulnerable amongst us sick. Planting native trees can clean up our waterways, beautify our world, and return native plants, that are becoming more scarce, to the food chain that supports native insects, birds and all creatures.

Native trees can be planted

  • in your own yard
  • in nearby park or Rails to Trails
  • at your congregation, your school, your local library

This Spring was our biggest distribution yet, with over 600 individuals and groups across Pennsylvania requesting almost 26,000 Free native trees and shrubs! This Fall, we’ve implemented some changes to the program. We have 9 Primary Distribution Sites and 24 Secondary Distribution sites.

You can support the work of this program by planting a tree, telling a friend, volunteering, or making a donation.

A few notes about the ordering process:

  • You should order your trees as soon as possible to allow for efficient ordering.  Trees (along with tubes and stakes if you request them) will be available at your selected pick-up location sometime in September/October. You will be notified when they have arrived.
  • You are welcome to order as many or as few as you wish. You will need to place a separate order for each planting location. You are responsible to ensure you have permission to plant at your location of choice. The plant list for Fall 2023 can be found here.
  • If you need help in being sure the plants you order will fit your planting site, please visit my favorite native plant information website, Morton Arboretum, which has great pictures of the plants. If you click all the links on the home page for each native tree or shrub, you'll find useful information on where the plant will best thrive, what light conditions it needs, how big it gets and whether you need more than one plant to create seeds. I'd also be glad to advise from my experience.
  • You will receive a copy of your order to your selected email address. If you have any issues ordering or have questions, you can reach me by email, or text/call 215-242-0854. We receive many requests each season, so please be patient with the process.
  • When you pick up your plants, you will be asked to scan a QR code that takes you to a reporting page. The report will ask you to confirm where they will be planted. This is a requirement from CBF to ensure the ongoing impact of the program.
  • We need lots of volunteers to make this happen! If you are interested in volunteering, please note that in the form. If you aren’t making an order, but are interested in volunteering please reach out to Greg directly, noting your location and interest.
  • Anticipated Program Timeline
    • July - Requests Received
    • August - Requests Confirmed, Dates for Distribution Locations Determined
    • September/October - Delivery to Primary Sites, Secondary Sites, and Pick Up

I personally want to thank all who have been involved in this program for your patience, your kindness in planting trees and, often, going above and beyond to volunteer in so many ways. This effort would not exist without those many acts of kindness.
