Subject: Milk, eggs, bread, and solar?

Learn about the solar energy you can buy at the store.

Hi Bill,

Remember when you switched on your solar system? The excitement you felt to lower your energy bills with an unlimited clean energy source.

Tens of millions of Americans can’t share this experience, but may be able to soon. This is thanks to plug-in solar.

What is plug-in solar and how does it work?

Plug-in solar panels connect to an outlet, supplying power directly to a home. This means users pay less to their utility. Small scale plug-in systems can be installed on a balcony, in a front or backyard, or on a roofdeck.

Small array that packs a big punch

Plug-in solar is proven technology. Customers in Europe have installed millions of plug-in solar systems in just the last few years. Depending on the size of the system and local energy prices, the payback time is around five years, but that will drop in half as more states enable plug-in solar.

Red tape stands in the way

So why hasn’t plug-in solar taken off in the U.S.?

State laws require the same kind of complex, technical diagram-heavy, and grid interconnection request process that you’d need for large solar systems. This needless bureaucracy makes these simple systems unaffordable.

The good news is that last year Utah became the first state to change its rules to allow people to use plug-in systems without this red tape. Dozens more states are considering legislation in 2026.

Plug-in solar is an exciting new way to help more people benefit from solar energy. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sending you more information about plug-in solar and ways you can take action to make it a reality in Pennsylvania.
