Subject: Will PA politicians walk away from the most successful climate program in the nation?

PennEnvironment Banner

After 30 years lobbying in the state legislature, the news sounded even too shocking to be true: Leaders in the Pennsylvania state House and Senate alongside Gov. Shapiro are considering pulling Pennsylvania out of one of the most successful climate programs in the nation.

We need our politicians in Harrisburg to be leaders -- not laggards -- when it comes to solving climate change.

Tell your state legislators and Gov. Shapiro to oppose a budget proposal that leaves climate solutions on the cutting room floor.

Tell the PA's Officials: Don't walk away from climate solutions. Take Action

The program is called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative ("RGGI", for short), and its 15-year track record of success is indisputable: From 2008 through 2018, climate pollution decreased by 47% in the states that are participating in RGGI, outpacing the rest of the country by 90%.1

At the same time, it's estimated that RGGI could reduce global warming pollution in Pennsylvania by a massive 188 million tons by 2030, in addition to curbing other harmful air pollution.2 This is critical, since Pennsylvania is currently the fourth largest climate polluting state in the US.3

Yet under pressure from major climate polluters, the fossil fuel industry and their political allies in Harrisburg, our Pennsylvania legislators and Gov. Shapiro may buckle and agree to pull out of this program as a side agreement to finalizing the state's budget.

After a summer with Pennsylvania wildfires, droughts and extreme weather, it should be clear that we need to address the climate crisis. We cannot keep kicking the can down the road for our children and grandchildren to deal with.

Time is running out for our politicians in Harrisburg to hear from their constituents on this important issue. Ask your state legislators and Gov. Shapiro to oppose any attack on climate solutions.

After you've sent this urgent email, please forward this to friends and family and ask them to do the same. Taking steps backward in the fight against climate change cannot be an option.

Thank you,

David Masur
