The Summer of Good Intentions by Francis Wilkinson is a refreshingly light novel. Set primarily in faded coastal village of Haulaville on a glorious summer afternoon, The Summer of Good Intentions paints a picture of a world gone mad, where memories of simpler times replaced the bitter disappointments of modern living. The author captured aspects of his own life as well, namely the thrill seeker's need for constant exploration and the danger of venturing into unknown territory. The storyline and characters were fresh and engaging, the descriptions vivid and stimulating.
The Summer of Good Intentions by Francis Wilkinson takes place in the rural community of Haulaville in July and August, 2009. The opening chapters vividly describe the changing moods of the small community as the summer approaches, particularly as school resumes and summer camps approach. In one such camp, older sister Ginger meets and befriends 18-year-old Devon who is away at her grandmother's summer home. A chance meeting changes both girls' lives and they spend the next several days together. While Devon and Ginger continue to enjoy their time together, Devon's grandmother returns from her visit, and meets Ginger.
The Summer of Good Intention has excellent writing. Ms. Wilkinson uses short paragraphs to support her main themes, and the character's voices are clear and realistic. The Summer of Good Intentions could have been a novel biped with similar elements and better characterisation, however, Ms. Wilkinson manages to add a fast-paced adventure and memorable set-pieces. The Summer of Good Intentions is not a science-fiction book, in fact, much of the content is based around practical daily activities. However, the novel is an excellent tale of friendship and hard work that would appeal to a broad range of readers.
