Sourcework: Academic Writing from Sources, Second Edition by Dollahite is the second printing of a popular book of the same title. In this new edition, the author's focus has been on the integration of writing into the humanities and Social Sciences. The editors sought to further refine the theory and application of source analysis. The book includes seventy-six essays, including an introduction to critical theory, a survey of academic writing in the humanities, a history of coursework, and case studies of selected literary and scholarly texts. In addition, the book has an abundant index and bibliography and more than sixty pages of detailed essays supporting both general and specific interpretations of the source material.
In spite of the book's various shortcomings (some of which are detailed in the text), this second edition remains a highly recommended work on the history of sourcework. The editors did a good job of preparing a text that is clear and useful, incorporating material from such disciplines as history, sociology, science, and English literature. I especially liked the inclusion of essays on cultural diversity, politics, gender, race, and ethnicity as influential agents in the history of sourcework, and the wide range of topics explored in the interpretive chapter.
However, as with any book review, my comments come with some reservation. The editors do not mention or offer any criticism of the many different interpretative strategies adopted throughout the text, including primary source extraction, multiple regression, and principal components analysis. These strategies, collectively, allow for a thorough investigation of the textual data, drawing upon various theories of literary interpretation. However, the editors also provide a brief list of suggested readings and suggested references, reiterating the need for a careful scrutiny of all interpretive strategies in light of current theories in the social sciences.
