The Complete Persepolis by Satrapi is a series of seven short stories written in Persian. Each story delves into the life of a young woman, from her childhood and puberty through to her marriage and divorce. The subjects are not the typical bride and groom, but rather traditional Persian ladies and gentlemen who have raised their children in both religious and civil ways. The result is a refreshing insight into the way that life is lived in traditional Iran - and also a fun and entertaining read for those who enjoy a bit of fantasy with a touch of reality.
Set in the final years of the reign of Shah Jahan, these seven tales span the period between the 5th and 7th century. They deal with topics such as arranged marriages, child rearing, dowry disputes, jealousy and the dark secrets kept by the old men. Although all this may sound somewhat sordid, it is essentially a fairy tale for modern times - a refreshing change for a world where we are used to popcorn, cartoons and computer games. The Complete Persepolis gives us a taste of how a typical Persian princess might act, and what the typical groom would do if he met his princess.
Satrapi is an extraordinary novel, and she succeeds on every level. Her vivid descriptions of the people and places make the book seem more alive - a refreshing change after the sometimes stiff stories we have been used to. The Complete Persepolis also has a strong plot and manages to bring the different strands together whilst maintaining a fast pace. The entire novel, The Complete Persepolis, is recommended to lovers of fantasy, although the story of Reza and his relationships with the princesses should appeal to those interested in historical fiction as well.
