The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster is a re-telling of the Peter Pan story, with some added twists and turns that make the story more interesting. The story starts out when a boy named Jack finds a mysterious trunk buried under the ground in his yard, with a note inside that reads: "Don't tell anyone else what this box holds. If you do, it may be stolen." The Phantom Tollbooth follows Jack and his friends as they solve the mystery and learn about the strange adventures that unfold as they go on to travel to Neverland.
The Phantom Tollbooth tells the tale of a fairy who lives in Neverland. She is the embodiment of beauty and magic and is seen by young James, who is searching for his own kind. The fairy is warded off by a fairy known as Bottom, but not before James has a beautiful ball gown designed by Queen Mara. But when the fairy gives birth to a boy, whom she has named Peter Pan, she sets in motion a series of events that leads them on their quest to find and save Neverland from the clutches of the evil Neverland King, Peter Pan.
The story, while a little slow at times, is full of wonderful descriptions of Neverland, its residents, and the local customs and etiquette. The illustrations, while not outstanding, are well done and will make this book a fun and entertaining read. This book also includes a few short stories that are entertaining enough on their own, but that will add greatly to the enjoyment derived from this great story. Overall, The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster is an enjoyable and easy read with plenty of entertainment value.
