What exactly is love? Many of us have a vague idea of what it means. Love is defined by most people in the west as romantic love or sexual love. In the east, however, love is more related to a person's commitment to another human being. In the United States, however, the word romance is typically used to refer to non-sexual love and/or attachment.
The question of what is love then becomes linked to questions about human sexuality. Freud poses the question that human beings are sexual animals. According to Freud, every sexual desire that a person has is directed toward an object. This object can be physical or perhaps even mental. In general, however, Freud believes that the human being must find fulfillment in satisfying his sexual desires in order to fully humanize him. When this happens, the person becomes capable of love because he is no longer obsessed primarily with the satisfaction of his sexual desires but rather is satisfied with sharing his body with another person.
For Freud, love and the psychology of love is ultimately a matter of the continuation of human relationships. In his view, a successful relationship is one that works through the years and decades rather than the short term, physical intimacy. Through therapy, a person can learn new ways of relating to his partner on an enduring psychological level. As a result, his relationship will be more fulfilling, and this satisfaction will help to support the person's quest for emotional as well as physical freedom.
