Philip Crosby started The Cultural Landscape as a doctoral research program at the University of Utah. He studied the relationship between landscape and culture and the visual culture of China, Japan, Mexico, Egypt, India, Russia, the United States, and Europe. He graduated in history in 1960 and became a professor at the University of Utah for the remainder of his career. Dr. Crosby has been described as a "reclusive" figure due to his large archive of maps and photos, which have been keynoted and used by many other scholars, artists and architects.
