Discovering The Humanities by Sayre is a brilliant little book. It is written in verse and the story is set during a time when there were a great many literary creations. This book has a very philosophical and romantic undertone to it. The author shows us how we can be affected by our environment and even how our emotions can affect the way that we think and the decisions that we make. This book is about accepting others and learning to embrace differences instead of shying away from them.

One of the main themes of this book is how each individual can use his or her gifts and talents in a manner that will help or hurt others. For example, a very talented singer might choose to express his or her talent in a certain way so that it will be able to help an abused child that wants to express their feelings. The singer is helping out and giving a piece of his or her talent for free so they can share what they have with those who need it most. The song then represents the human being's ability to love and do good. In a way it gives a voice to the child, an identity, a personality, and a way of expressing themselves.

What separates this story from others is the character's journey. Instead, of the reader seeing the human being as a victim or someone that needs rescuing, the writer sees the person growing as a human being. They grow from a situation that was traumatic to them but also to understand how they can use their talent and gifts to make a positive difference in another human's life. This story is uplifting because it presents a hope that all people are capable of doing great things if they are given the chance. There is also a lesson in the resilience of human beings that shows us that even when something bad happens, we should not lose our sense of hope and fight back.
