Julien's Primer of Drug Action by Advokat is a novel that has a great deal of promise. It starts out promisingly, as we are introduced to the world (or part of the world) of drug crime and its many complexities. However, things quickly go south for Julien, who finds himself in a situation that he can't get out of, and where his only escape seems to be death. He is held captive in a drug laboratory by a group of Russian organized criminals, and his only hope for freedom seems to be an experimental process that may not work...
One of the best things about this book is that it's clear that this isn't your typical science fiction or mystery book. The story is action/adventure with strong moral messages, and if you're looking for a book that deals with the ethical and legal issues of illegal drug use, this one definitely fits the bill. The book starts off as Julien and his friend Charlie are in a park being abused by drug dealers, but the book quickly introduces us to Julien's captors and his captors' relationship with him, which I found to be very interesting and thought provoking.
There are some really great twists at the end of the book, and some other elements of the book kept me reading with a book that wasn't really that exciting to begin with. Overall, the book was just about what I expected it to be: an interesting story about drug use and the dark side of it. I enjoyed reading about the legal and ethical issues surrounding the use of illegal substances, and the way our society deals with drugs on a daily basis. I also liked how the characters reacted when they were being tested for drugs. Overall, this was a fun book about drug use, and I think that the positive messages the book conveyed would appeal to a wide range of readers.
