If you have taken a biology class in the past, then The Curious Researcher: A Guide to Writing Research Papers may be just what you need to help you write that papers, project, or thesis. It was written by Ballenger, who is an instructor at Kaplan University. I like it because it really addresses the different issues involved in writing a research paper. It also addresses how you should go about writing it in the first place, and what kind of documentation you should consider before submitting it to publishers. I think the steps that he outlines in this book are really practical and easy to understand, even for a new student of biology.
There are three main parts to The Curious Researcher: A Guide to Writing Research Papers, and these are chapters on what to write, what not to write, and what to include in the paper. There are five chapters worth of material, which cover everything from selecting a topic to organizing the paper and making sure that all your data and observations are included, to using the proper format (abbreviated Bibliography, table of contents, etc. ), and finishing with a useful conclusion. I personally don't like Ballenger's recommendations, but then again, I've taken biology courses from many different instructors, and I've also written papers on my own. I can't necessarily say that any of my essays and studies were done "excellently" in those classes, but they were all done using the same techniques. I did, however, find that I did a much better job of communicating what I wanted to say to my students, which helped me to improve my grades and my students' understanding of what they were learning.
Overall, this is a very helpful text for anyone who teaches about science. I particularly appreciate Ballenger's clear writing style, his ability to get the point across in an easy-to-read manner, and his recommendations for specific research paper topics. I also think that he nails the "how to" aspect so well in this book, especially in chapter three. If you're looking for a solid, thorough introduction to conducting research papers, this is a must-have book for your list.
