Describing architectural spaces is a bit like trying to navigate a crowded airport with no voice of the traveler left to guide you, Entender la Arquitectura: Sus Elementos Historias Y Meccanico-Ameno, or the architect-in-residence, has done it for you, showing you the best ways to interpret a building through its architecture. The book starts out easy, with a short introduction describing the book, and how it came to be. Then, a short preface exploring the history and context of Western architecture, the book then goes into explaining the elements and features of this popular genre of Western architecture, from the perspective of an expert, giving you an overview of how different styles and features relate to one another, how architecture relates to the form of a building, and finally delving into its applications to real life, with an account of buildings designed specifically as homes or offices.

Describing architecture through its design, the book then goes into discussing spaces, how spaces can be interpreted in architectural terms, how architecture relates to people's built environment, how scale is related to human traffic, and finally looking at the use of materials to achieve certain effects and to explore questions of construction methodology. The book ends with a very short note at the end, inviting readers to go online to further research the material and to share their comments and thoughts about the book. This book really feels more like an academic journal than a children's book, even though the design of each page is clearly aimed at an audience of young adults. The writing style contains too much jargon and complex language for a younger audience, however, this is not really a fault of the book, as the complexity of the language makes it difficult to understand for someone who has not studied architectural design before, but the author is clearly an accomplished professional in her field and she succeeds in delivering her ideas in a clear and concise manner.

This book is definitely not for the person who wants to learn more about the basics of designing a home or a workplace. It is rather a book for those individuals already involved in the architectural design industry, as it delves into issues of space planning and design, the relationship between architecture and people, and the visual vocabulary used in architecture. This book does not offer many new design concepts or techniques, but it does successfully combine different areas of expertise to produce an interesting, enlightening, and useful read for architects, home designers, and anyone else interested in this exciting and demanding field.
