Hi all,

A couple of weeks ago we had a really productive meeting in which we decided that ORC should focus on two things, one relatively short term and quite doable, and the other a slightly more mid-term project to work on. I think that minutes from the meeting are still to be sent round, but here is a brief summary:

1. Drafting "Guidelines on the Ethics of Activist Research"

The idea is to use this list to generate some broad outlines which could then be brought to an open meeting for as many as possible to partocipate. This has already been brought up at Occupy London GAs and at previous ORC meetings. The idea is that the process of putting together some broad ethical guidelines for all those who research social movements could trigger some thoughts about "good practice". I'll send another email on this soon.

2. Organising a second National Convergence, but this time with a focus on bringing together already existing groups/networks that are engaged in forms of activist/militant/participatory research. We felt that the first convergence went really well, and that we know how to do this, and should follow up by trying to map out as many of the groups that already exist in order to see exactly what is being done, what else could be done, if we can think a bit about our strategy together.

It was suggested that we should meet once again before christmas to follow up on both of these. Given that not much has been yet this may not be necessary, but I am still happy to meet. In the meantime I'll get a piretpad document sent around to start drafting point 1.

Thanks,

Sam

Occupy Rhetoric

This is beautiful.

This also comes at THE moment where I am having to defend my Plan of Study to my doctoral committee (in the next week) to see if the project/plan on studying the vernacular of the Occupy Movement in NYC "flies." (Don't worry, it *WILL* fly.) And at the heart and soul of this project (which began both prior to Occupy and in tandem with it) has been a concern with how to account for "findings" or discoveries in such a manner that is both fidelitous to the ontological chain of emergence without compromising individuals or sources (or oneself) that might be implicated with or associated by [or made vulnerable because of] their "being there" in the moment of it's realization. I've given MUCH thought to the topic of ethical practice (it is, in many ways, the crux of the field of Rhetoric) which has both hindered and facilitated my "success" within Occupy circles in bringing to light that matter which began this"occupation" of rhetoric in the first place.

This is all to say: thank you, Sam, for putting this together; and I hope to become more involved in ORC as I transition more into "academic" mode. I definitely have some ideas on how to make our research projects more connected...and able to "speak" to one another.

Sincerely,

Meghan

"Occupy Rhetoric" is: 1. an account addressing how the Occupy movement is shifting public (and private) discourse through what Occupiers are saying and how they are having their voices heard; 2. a multimodal dialogic platform designed to demonstrate how the rhetoric of the Occupy movement—and the "occupation" of Rhetoric as a practice, discipline, and field of study—functions as a force and form of labor during times of economic, social, and biological c/krisis.

Thanks Sam!

And Meghan, love your comments! i think making
our research projects more connected will be the/a major focus of our next national convergence.

Just putting up a blog post now with minutes and summary - sorry it's taken so long, been working out how to do my first ever tax return, among other more and less alienating tasks :)

Sam, hope you don't mind if i use your email text for the blog post summary for efficiency?

Hi all,

Happy 2013.

We had some excitement over our new projects at the end of last year, so let's try and keep the momentum going. We have two main foci for the start of this year: drafting the ethical guidelines; and thinking about putting together a second national convergence, focused on already existing networks.

On the first point, two things need to be done. Firstly, people who are interested should take part in writing this draft document:

Secondly, we need to sort out a time and place for an open assembly to discuss the document. I will email the wider occupy list involving them in this loop, and I suggest others email any other networks who may be interested

On the second point, we will probably need to have a meeting at some point. Does it make sense to do this after finishing the ethical guidelines? Or we could meet to discuss both things?

For now the priority seems to be writing the ethical guidelines and getting a time and date booked. How does February sound for people? Any proposals for interesting venues apart from UCL?
