I heard the news a while ago but still was surprised to see them go. Kinda feel guilty as the only thing I was ever buying there was the solder I like a lot and last minute 'emergency' parts like IC sockets, single resistors and such I couldn't justify shipping cost from Mouser. I went there today to get lifetime supply of N32AR solder but the only thing I could find was pocket spool. In many regards Maplin sucked but I will miss them anyways

I need something that leaves no nasty brown residue. Had a quick search and Kester 275 series no clean should work here. Also I like higher melting point so 96.5/3/.5 composition should do just fine. Will buy a spool to try as that pathetic pocket one I have from Maplin will do for only a couple of weeks

I think people miss what they had the potential to be rather than what they actually were.  I've visited it very rarely over the last 10 years because I found that basically they never had what I needed for last minute requirements and massively overpriced otherwise.
