VAT on Hackspace

As some of you know from beginning October we have to pay VAT on the Hackspace rental. This was not previously paid due to a tax loophole on rental of storage premises. This loophole was closed in the last budget

I guess this will come up at the AGM, but might I propose that those who can afford it voluntarily increase their monthly payment by 20%. There is still a gap between income and expenditure being plugged by Ryan.

 

Or better; bring in more new members.

Everyone is  looking at how  to make membership things clearer, any  feedback is really good. Did you get to make a donation? Every £1 is *really*  important to the survival of The Space.

Appointing someone to deal with membership would be a good start, I think everyone
assumed somebody else would reply to my question about membership but yours is
the only one - 10 days after my posting.

I'd like to join, if only so I dont feel guilty asking all these questions. Its unlikely I'll be using the space much, and as such would plump for a per visit plus consumables deal.
But that said I wouldnt mind paying a monthly sub as a 'lite user' or something, to help support the group, and play my little part in it existing in the first place.
Really I feel I would be paying for the privelage of knowing you clever guys are there if I get really stuck! (dont worry I wont go crazy) And access to any info that is sure to develop on the Wiki

A lite membership may interest me too. I can't see me getting to the space very often due to other commitments, but I read the threads here. May be you could have an "associate" level membership or "Friends of the Space".

How about £2 per visit + materials/wear-tear/equipment donations to cover anything specific?  e.g. 1cm of solder is nothing, but 100 people using 1cm is significant.  Similarly things like the laser cutter and CNC mill should imply a larger donation due to the large operational costs.

Like many on this list I don't come very often at all but I'm happy to contribute for my attendance when I do make it.  A couple of quid seems a perfect number to me if I'm not using any specific tools.

I would be happy to forgo on demand access. How about a drop in (as in Im just about to drop in) fee, plus a rate card and subsequent honesty box for consumables, wear etc. Im only in it for the T shirt!

For what is s worth...

I don't think we should have a light membership it should be based on what the person is able to contribute to the group. So some can contribute more in financial terms others on other ways.

So how about we adopt the true "pay what you want" philosophy. Anyone can be a member and get an access card if they pay a monthly amount via a standing order.

The standing order as this allows the space to have a level of assurance of the monthly funds available.

Should we have a minimum amount, or perhaps a suggested minimum say. I know London has a minimum of £5, perhaps they only get a door card if the contribution is £5 or more
