It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Andrew
Jacobs. Andrew died on Friday 8 Jan as a result of catching COVID-19
before Christmas and subsequently suffering a stroke.

He will be sorely missed at the space as his skills with early CPUs and
debugging were in demand amongst members. He also put in a lot of work
behind the scenes acting as a director and treasurer for rLab. He was a
regular on Wednesday open evenings and his welcoming nature was often
the first real experience people had of rLab, its people and projects.

His family have announced that the funeral service will take place on
the 1st of February at noon. Obviously with COVID restrictions still
certain to be in place we won't be able to send a representative of the
lab to the service but it will be broadcast online and we will post the
link as soon as we have it.

His wife has indicated that if anyone wants to offer a tribute or
message then she will try to include it in the service, time permitting.
If you have anything that you'd like to send either to his family either
generally or specifically for the service then please email it to me
directly at the usual address and I'll relay it to his family.

I'm really sad to read this.

Just a couple of days ago I was sorting some things in my workshop, a treat at the end of which was I found a nice niche for my old BBC computer which Andrew and Barnaby helped me to fix. Obviously, with that level of quality input, it has stayed fixed! And by coincidence the same evening Andrew's name cropped up on an internet forum as he led a very productive nerd life before and away from rLab. Hard to think he was probably in hospital at the time.

I really appreciate the time he put into keeping rLab on a firm footing. The current directors too - and losing Andrew will be both a practical and emotional loss so I hope all goes well.

Take care,

This is terrible news - my heart goes out to his family

I’ll remember Andrew for his seemingly endless patience with my stupid questions, his extraordinarily in-depth knowledge of early CPUs and operating systems, for his stories that would end with him crying with laughter, for the care he showed to Bob in his later years, and for how he would go way out of his way to give me a lift home when I needed it. He made a big contribution to our community over the years and will be sorely missed.

This is such incredibly sad news. Andrew has been part of the Hackspace since the very early days and helped out in so many ways over his ten+ years of membership.

I will never forget his unique blend of sharp witty humour and insightful advice.

Many Wednesday nights we chatted for hours about the IT and banking industry and set the world to rights with a mix of humour and anger at wasteful systems.

His dedication to quitely helping build and support rlab, from day one, are testament to his great character.

His skills were legendary among his peers. Taking on huge complex projects by himself and producing results so spectacular it left the large corporate teams in the dust.

You will be missed my friend.

Owing to the large number of people who've sent messages for his family
it won't be practical for me to reply to each of you individually, but
please rest assured that your messages and tributes have been received
and will be passed on to the family.

I'm really sad to hear that. I can't really add much, the others have summed him up perfectly. Any Wednesday Andrew would be there chatting about his latest retro cpu hack or sometimes giving me tips on japanese. He was always a sensible head you could rely on, friendly, generously knowledgeable and welcoming.

He will be missed

Commiserations to his family. He was a treasured member of the rlab family and will be sorely missed.

Very saddened to hear this, my condolences to Mary and his family.

I knew Andrew since the early Headley Road days and appreciated the effort he put in to supporting rlab. Conversations were always stimulating as was his dogged adherence to PIC in the teeth of Arduino popularity. He cooked up some delightful projects, the dolls house TV was my favourite. I won't be able to do anything with 6502 without thinking of him.

Yes we will be thinking of Andrew with every uneven tick of the hackspace's Vetinari Clock.

The Hackspace wouldn't be what it is today without Andrew.

Any time I needed help he was there, whether it was with the hackspace, or personal matters when I needed it most. Even before becoming a director, he was so generous with his time and effort to make the hackspace work.

I'm so saddened to hear of his passing. Please can anyone who is in contact send my deepest condolences to his family. I'll be looking out for some kind of a link to the service.

All your condolence messages so far have been passed along to the
family, but there's still plenty of time if anyone else wants to add
their own message.

Andrew's funeral will be Monday 1st February at 12.00 Noon at West
Berkshire Crematorium. Due to COVID restrictions it will not be possible
for any of us to attend but the service will be streamed at:

https://www.obitus.com/
Username: Soco7807
Password : 076575

His family have asked that the streaming link be shared with anyone who
you think knew Andrew and would wish to virtually attend the service

Andrew's family have asked for donations to the Stroke Association in
lieu of flowers, there is a donation page at

I sent a separate message of condolence to Mary, but of course share the sadness here within our community.

I wonder if anyone has the skill and facilities to make a short video for his family? I think that they are not fully aware of what has been built at rLab and Andrew's major contribution. Also, it would be great if some of his projects like his clock and the miniature TV could be immortalised. Maybe Alex even has some video footage of one of the early rLab meetings?

Andrew, great memories and massive respect.

Richard

I have found two items with Andrew;
- a snip from Reading Chronicle of Nov 7, 2012 below - Andrew is 2nd from left next to Bob
- the 2014 "Reading between the lines" video production about rlab on Vimeo which includes Andrew - https://vimeo.com/105988690

There are also;
A website Andrew created which has some of his early projects - http://www.obelisk.me.uk/
Andrew was active on 6502.org as user BitWise - his last post of 996 was on 27th December 2020
Andrew had a github site which includes the code for his Lord Vetinari clock - https://github.com/andrew-jacobs

Recalling the great down to earth positive influence that Andrew was for me, and his part in making Reading Hackspace what it is, I recall the many projects and stories he relayed; a couple of things stand out, his projects on the Doll's House TV, the Annoying Clock hack, and our annual Xmas Pie Trip to Sweeney & Todds, something we sadly missed this last time. Andrew chivied members for a £10 deposit each year so we had the numbers to book a table, without his dogginess I doubt we would ever got ourselves together. I found a pic from 2016 and although grainy zoom to the end of the long table it brings back some good memories for me.

This is sad news indeed.

I had a few brief but interesting chats with him too. A very intelligent and witty gentleman.

Me sincere condolences to his family at this tough time.

I watched Andrew Jacobs funeralCast.  It was v.sad, he was 55, but had influenced and impressed so many people. Lots of tributes were read out, including some from rLab members. A passage from a Tao philosophy about the circle of life, that Andrew had book marked, was read.  His wife, Mary, is from N.I. and they finished with a recording of her singing 'Fields of Barley' just in case anyone was not already in tears. Thank you Steve for posting the link. R.I.P. Andrew.

If anyone wanted to watch the service but was unable to do so at the
time, we do have a recording of it. It's a bit too large to post here or
to email but if interested then please contact me directly and we'll
arrange a way to get a copy to you.

What a terrible shame. I am so sorry to hear this news.

I always got on well with him and I was looking forward to picking his brains on some arduino projects I'm working on.

I doubt if I will be the only person to say this: He will be sadly missed.

Very sad - 55 is too young to die.
