Does the hackspace or any of it's members have any thread gauges?

I am looking to identify the thread on the business end of a Dremel Flex Shaft. By the business end I mean the end where the tool attaches, via a collet. I am not looking for the thread on the collet lock. On the handle of the shaft there is a removable collar. It is the thread of the removable collar that I am trying to identify.

Measuring with callipers, the OD is around 12.5mm. so very slightly under 1/2". The pitch of the thread is around 1mm - so 25ish tpi.

My suspicion is that it is 1/2" UNF but that is 20tpi - meaning I need a trip to the opticians as well.

In case anyone is wondering, I am seeking the ability to make accessories for my Dremel - such as this. After we were all looking at the Shapeoko on Monday, I had a fit of the Ryan's ("JUST DO IT!") and bought a 3/4"-12 BSF tap. That means that I have now 3d printed a mount for the current Dremel like spindle and cleaned out the thread. I will drop that off if I am passing through Reading, so that people can play with the Shapeoko while Ryan returns the improved spindle to eBay and gets a less broken one.

Regards,
Malcolm

Can't quite follow which is the business end, but your's isn't the
modern Dremel: The collet nut (for attaching a spinning thing) is
9/32"x40 tpi, the housing cap (for attaching the Dremel to a mount) is
19x2mm but your 3/4"-12 should have fitted as it is only plastic.
Takeaway: they are being as awkward as possible.

Most mobile's macro is good enough if you hold a ruler to the centre of
the thread.

This (https://flic.kr/p/qzik4G) is my Dremel. It says 2010 on the label but was bought in 2011 slightly before TVRRUG started.

By the business end of the flex shaft I mean this (https://flic.kr/p/rcYvzv). As the picture shows, it is the current Flex Shaft 250.

It has a standard collett thread (i.e. The same as the thread on the collett on the main unit, but behind that is a removable collar. That reveals a thread with what I imagine is a similar function to that on the main body. Unfortunately, it is a smaller thread.

My next step is to borrow David's gauges and see what they tell me. Thanks David.

Malcolm

Thanks Barnaby.

I clearly need to improve my googling skills. Maybe using Google instead of DuckDuckGo might help but will enable the non-evil doing empire to flood my browsing with ads for powered multi-tools.

I don't recall seeing the flex shaft mount when I searched for "Dremel Mount" on Thingiverse yesterday. It is there today, however - about 3 rows down.....

Malcolm
