I just bought a Harrison M300 Lathe for rlab.

Now I need help to move it from Ascot to rlab.

Weight is around 600 or 700 kg.

Anyone got access to heavy lifting equipment or suitable vehicle ?

Need to move this week.

Well done! Tuesday would be difficult for me, but let me know as this
will be a many-hands job even with the heavy equipment.

Also details of where the pledges should be paid.

No, but this is probably worth a read:

I've an engine crane you're welcome to borrow for the move. The crane does not lift that high so would recommend hiring a flat bed trailer from a local hire shop. My trailer is rated about 500kg.

Hire should be about 20 quid for a day. Also have a number of military ratchet straps you're welcome to use.

I've not got equipment, but I can offer you some extra hands any time this week at either end.

Update:

My trailer has suspension but is neither braked nor plated, which means max trailer weight will be 750kg.  It's probably safe to carry the lathe and I'd be happy for it to be used to do so, but it may be better to find a higher rated trailer.

The trailer is currently set up as a motorcycle trailer but I planned to put a wooden bed/box on it later.  Not sure whether 18mm OSB would be man enough for the weight, I suspect not which means either load spreading with more wood or just get another trailer.  I have a large number of unused roofing joists which would work well as load spreaders.

Either way the engine crane looks to be the way to move the lathe short distances.  You'll need a lifting eye if the seller isn't providing one, which is probably M10 or M12.  My crane is a 1t crane, i.e. 250kg lift at full reach, 500kg at mid reach and 1t at short reach.  I can't find dimensional info but it'll be important to determine the gap between the pillars to see if the crane legs will fit under the lathe to lift it.  It's also important to find out the lifting eye height, since if it's high the shorter reach of my 1t crane won't be enough to get it off the ground.

Having read about moving these lathes it looks like many hands make light work.  Obviously doing the move outside 'normal' working hours will mean that we can get more hands.  Might also be worth building/borrowing/buying some very high strength moving dollies so that the lathe can be moved into the space without the hassle of moving an engine crane around.

Let me know if you need me…

I will get a quote tomorrow from professional machine movers. If anyone has local contacts for good value movers, favours owed, or  discounts please let me know quickly.

For a trailer, floor loading and stability are the likely issues on top of general moving the beast. It would need at least a metal floored trailer such as the ones used for micro diggers.
The lathe is top heavy, so would need a large trailer with strong lashing points.

It is an expensive lathe, so I don't mind spending some more money for safe transport.

Is anyone up for:

a) helping clear out a bit of room for the lathe tonight
b) helping shift the lathe at the other end early tomorrow morning

We're meeting at the seller's place around 730-800am tomorrow, it's near Ascot, can anyone help? Stuart? Any other early risers? Get in touch for details!

Not sure which Stuart you were targeting that at, I'm happy to provide any equipment but can't help move it at that time.  Is this a pre-move assessment or an attempt to actually move it?

Cheers,
Stuart

This is more than attempt to move it, we've got a hiab coming and we're MOVING IT (bloody!)

If you can, it might be helpful to have any lifting kit you have dropped off at the hackspace tonight (or, I could pick up anything but an engine crane at your house tonight, but I don't think I'll get an engine hoist in the back of my astra!)

Lathe is safely in its new home! Also came with a pillar drill, sand blaster and a power saw!

Thanks to:
Richard for making it all happen
Ryan for swearing lots
Jon HK for the van and being well on it
Scott the chief hydraulics operator
Barnaby for heavy lifting
Gary for light entertainment
