Hello Gang,

It's awfully quiet around here this week. Are you sure you don't all
want to come back?

As promised, I have a list of Conservation-y links for you:

Canadian Conservation Institute - don't hesitate to call or email cci-
icc_se...@pch.gc.ca for information or help if you find your
shelves fallen over, your collection somehow soaking wet or covered in
mold, or want to have an artifact investigated further- remember all
the beautiful, shiny equipment?

http://www.cci-icc.gc.ca/index-eng.aspx
1030 Innes Road
Ottawa ON K1B 4S7
Canada

Tel.: 613-998-3721 or
in Canada 1-866-998-3721
Fax: 613-998-4721
TTY/TDD: 819-997-3123

We spoke briefly about the CCI Notes - these are available for free to
download and print at

http://www.cci-icc.gc.ca/crc/notes/index-eng.aspx

May I recommend (make a little reference binder for these, but don't
use a PVC binder because you know much better than that....)

N1/1 General precautions for storage areas (2002)

N3/1 Preventing Infestations: Control Strategies and Detection Methods
(1996)

N5/1 Care of Ceramics and Glass (2007)

N9/2 Storage of Metals (2007)

N10/3 Storage and Display Guidelines for Paintings (1993)

N11/2 Storing Works on Paper (1995)

N11/1 Making Protective Enclosures for Books and Paper Artifacts
(1996)

N11/7 Basic Care of Books (1995)

N14/1 Emergency Preparedness for Cultural Institutions: Introduction
(1995)

N15/1 Care of Objects Made from Rubber and Plastic (1997)

N15/6 Trade Literature for Industrial Collections (2002)

The list looks intimidating, but they are very short, easy to
understand and to implement.

The Preservation.gc.ca website is http://www.preservation.gc.ca/index-eng.asp
and is intended for the general public. You guys have been promoted to
'interested public' so you might find the CCI information more
relevant.

For recent graduates looking for jobs, the Canadian Museums
Association website has a great list: http://bit.ly/rj40lu Young
Canada Works (.gc.ca) will also have a wide list of internships
available for next summer. Check it again in the spring.

A very useful catalogue of artifact-related information is http://www.bcin.ca/
These items are available through inter-library loans. Take advantage
of it!
I also find http://aata.getty.edu/NPS/ useful.

I wish you all well with your collections and research projects, and
keep in touch!

Take care,
