How to download news?

I've been using this app for quite a while to read my feeds but only
recently tried reading news -- I can't get it to download news items.
I have all the background activity turned off and update my feeds
manually. When I go to the News tab and select Menu -> Download Now, I
get no news. I've been staring at a blank tab for two days :) Same
behavior whether I'm online or offline.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to enable background updating?

Menu->Download Now it is equivalent to Settings->Periodic Downloads->Download Now.

It will trigger the background download, you should see a notification on top that says "Starting Download". Do you see that?

If you have chosen your favorite feeds or favorite labels (by going to Settings->Periodic Downloads->Choose Favorite Tags/Feeds) then only those feeds and labels will be downloaded. If you haven't chosen any, then about 100 latest items will be downloaded across all the feeds. Note that these feeds will be the Google Reader feeds, and not the Google News (one under the "News" tab) feeds. If you want Google News feeds to get downloaded in background, you can select them in Settings->Periodic Downloads->Choose Favorite feeds.

Let me know if that helps.

So is the News tab actually a tab for RSS feeds of Google News? I
don't get it ... I grabbed the RSS feeds for my favorite Google News
areas and stuck them in my Reader feeds and they still don't show up
on the News tab (but they do show up in my Reader feeds now). Sorry if
I'm being dense about this.

BTW, I don't get any indication in the notification area unless I turn
on Notifications in Settings (if that's what you mean).

You are right. The feeds under the "News" tab are Google News RSS feeds. (More might be added in future. They are for the benefit of users who don't have many RSS feeds in Google Reader, but would rather want to browse generally known news channels).

Yes, if you have subscribed to all the Google News feeds already in your Google Reader account, then you won't see them again under the "News" tab. So in your case, you will see nothing under the "News" tab.

Yeah, if you have checked Settings->Miscellaneous->Hide Notifications, then you won't see any notification when background download starts.

Hmmm ... I still don't quite get it. So, earlier, when I was
subscribed to NO Google News feeds in Reader, what would I need to
have done to have some show up in the News tab? And now that I've only
subscribed to a few of the Google News feeds, why don't the others
show up there? Is the News tab for people who are subscribed to NO
feeds whatsoever -- essentially, people who don't use Reader?

No. If you had not subscribed to the Google News feeds in Google
Reader, then you should have seen some feeds under the News tab down
the 'Google News' label. If you didn't see them, then it is unexpected
and might be a bug.

If you are subscribed to only few of the Google news feeds, then other
ones should show up under News.

If you want to troubleshoot, you can try couple of things:
1. Try Thorough refresh - on first screen press Menu -> Refresh and
choose Thorough.
2. Uninstall and reinstall the app and see if that fixes the problem.
If you added the Google News feeds to Reader after you started using
ReaderScope, then that might have led to some problem, I haven't
tested that scenario well.

I'm only subscribed to 3 Google News feeds and I subscribed to them
after I installed the app. I have done several Thorough refreshes.
I've just done another Thorough refresh and am still not seeing
anything on the News tab. I'll uninstall and reinstall and see if that
helps. I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks for the help!

Forgot to answer this one. As of now, I found some anomaly myself in
this behavior. I will debug it by next week.

Uninstall/reinstall fixed it. Sorry for the delay but I thought I'd
already updated with the results of my activities.
