The Reading Room and Filmvirus presents "Romania Model" program: screenings of two documentaries: "Videograms of a Revolution" and "Autobiography of Nicolae Caucescu" followed by a talk on Romanian Revolution, Nicolae Caucescu, and the media by Assistant Prof. Suthachai Yimprasert and Keiko Sei on Saturday, September 24th, 2011.
We invite you to take part in this special event in revisiting the past in order ...to comprehend the present and to predict the future, and in monitoring and collecting remnants from the historical televised moment and its aftermath.
The two documentaries powerfully capture the Romanian Revolution in essence without shooting one single shot, without interview footage, and without narrative voiceover! "Videograms of a Revolution" (Harun Farocki/Andrei Ujica) presents carefully collaged news footage from the day Nicolae Caucescu was ousted from power while "Autobiography of Nicolae Causescu" (Andrei Ujica) narrates his autobiography by using found footages from existing propagandistic documentaries and films.
Followed by "Romania Model" talk by Asst. Prof. Dr. Suthachai Yimprasert, a historian and activist; and Keiko Sei, a writer, curator, and media advocate; moderated by Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa and Wip Vinyaratn.
Speakers' Bio:
Dr. Suthachai Yimprasert is an assistant professor at Department of History, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University. He is a historian and scholar who publishes widely on modern Thai history, Portuguese history, and Eastern European history. He publishes "Another Side of Europe: Modern History of Eastern Europe, 1800-2000" (2010); and he was an editor of Journal of European Studies, European Studies Center, Chulalongkorn University.
Keiko Sei is is a writer, curator, and media advocate. She was an organizer of "The Media Are With Us! The Role of the Television in the Romanian Revolution" International Conference in Budapest, 1990, and an editor of "Von der Buerokratie zur Telekratie ~ Rumanien im Fernsehen" (From Bureaucracy to Telecracy ~ Romania on television), 1990. She will talk about what actually happened at the television station during the Romanian Revolution and the significance of the first televised revolution in history. She will also talk about films of Andrej Ujica and Harun Farocki.
